For a slight change of pace.
Ideas. Where the hell do they come from? Can you make those little fuckers show up? They pretty much just show up of their own free will, although I can usually lure them in if necessary. Sometimes there's an obvious trigger--something read/watched/discussed--but mostly they just appear while I'm trying to do something else.
Wild horse-bunnies. When a story just gets pulled right out of you. Do you get them? Sometimes. Usually I don't have time to actually write it, so I wind up doing a bare bones version--I've got at least five or six of those knocking around at the moment, don't know if I'll ever get around to actually writing them. I hope so.
Writer's block. Have you been scourged? Totally blocked, as in unable to write anything? Not as far back as I can remember. I have been blocked plenty of times on individual stories, though. Got a bunch of those sitting on my harddrive too, just twiddling their (metaphorical) thumbs.
Clean up duty. Do you like editing? I don't mind it. Actually, I'm kind of obsessive about it. I'll continue tweaking stories even after they've been posted and commented on.
The ending. Is it hard for you to find the ending? Nope. That's generally where the story just sort of stops. Sometimes it requires a little fine-tuning, but nothing more than that.
The title. Where do you get yours? Do you have yours when you start the story? A lot of my titles are quotations of some sort--many of them from Emily Dickinson and Gerard Manly Hopkins. Usually I'll have an idea of the type of title I want, and then it's just a matter of finding the right phrasing. A few stories only have working titles, though, and one or two never get past that (such as "Tailfeathers"). Occasionally I'll wind up with a title but no story to go with it.
Plot. If you plot out your stories first, raise your hand. Erm. Either I know the story before I start writing it, or I blunder around for a bit, figure out what's not working, and then start over with a more structured outline. But I haven't ever plotted out cold and then written a story. The few times I've tried, the story died pretty quickly.
POV. How do you choose your POV for a scene? For a story? Again, the story/scene presents itself from a certain POV and in a certain style. Later, I might go back and alter things as necessary. If I have to deliberately pick whose eyes I'm to see through, it's a pretty reliable sign that the story isn't ready to be told.
Challenge. Do you like them? Do they inspire you? Sometimes. Depends on whether I've got spare time and energy in my life at the moment.
Sex. Do you like writing sex? Don't like reading it, don't think I could stomach actually writing it. I have no problem writing around it, though. But it's closed doors on the actual act.
And now I shall go write about John Sheppard and a dragon, SG-1 and Greek myths, and Peter Pan after the end of the story. (STORIES! I have been waiting all week to do this.)
