Kennedy's Apartment, New York City, April 2002 (Tuesday, Fandom Time)

Aug 08, 2011 23:13

It had been... really dry on the gossip scene for months now, at least if you were Kennedy and your gossip scene consisted of news from the Hellmouth. In point of fact there hadn't been much of anything at all since some brief rumblings of a demon nest six weeks ago, and some vague and weird thing about a fast-food joint the month before that (and ( Read more... )

Sookie had never been to New York. Honestly, she could count on a few fingers how many times she'd even crossed the Mason-Dixon Line, and all of those instances had been decidedly Fandom's influence.

Needless to say, she was somewhere between shell-shocked and starry-eyed by the time they arrived at Kennedy's building. Sookie kept staring out windows, eyes wide, and was trying really hard not to just burst with excitement at random New Yorkers. This was why poor Bobby had gotten stuck with the luggage. Because Sookie was having a squee attack.

"Oh my goodness, we're so high up," Sookie breathed as she peered at the floor number on the elevator again, then scurried over to knock on the door she really, really hoped was Kennedy's. She hadn't double-checked with her special sense because frankly New York had already started to give her a little bit of a headache. SO MANY PEOPLE.

Bobby, on the other hand, had been- not tense, exactly, but alert in a way that he wasn't in Fandom. Stepping in to a city where you tended to get attacked by supervillains every other trip would do that. Not that that stopped him from grinning like a goof as he watched Sookie's reaction to the city.

"Not quite high enough to be the penthouse suite," he observed. "But just about. Sweet."

"Already with the punning?" Kennedy pulled the front door open and stuck her head out, grinning at them before stepping back and gesturing for them to come in. "God, it's been forever. I missed you guys."

She hadn't thought to warn Sookie about the SO MANY PEOPLE, but she took the population density completely for granted. Sorry, Sookie.

It was totally okay, since Sookie had Karla's necklace in her luggage anyway. But apologies to Kennedy -- not that Sookie was going to make them -- for the fact that she all but squealed and ran forward in a hug.

It hadn't even been that long for her, really. "Hi! Your city is so pretty! How are you?"

And Bobby was going to dump the luggage rather unceremoniously in the entranceway before turning an exaggerated pout on the two of them. "Come on, come on, quit hogging the hugs," he teased Sookie. "I want my turn too."

"Tchah," scoffed Kennedy, hugging Sookie back hard with one arm and holding the other out to Bobby. "Multitasking: it's not just for nerds any more, you know, even if I'm gonna be nineteen and ancient in a few weeks. How the hell've you been?"

If she was trying to hang on a little tenaciously, well... look, it'd been a long time.

"Good!" That was sort of a lie. "You missed some excitement this week. And if you're ancient, I'm on the heels of ancientness so I might as well just give it all up now."

"I think I might win at ancientness," Bobby offered (because it was totally a competition), not disputing the 'good' assertion. "Since I'm legally twenty-something back home."

It was totally a competition. It was always a competition.

"Of course I missed excitement, when it's been boring as hell here, or maybe the opposite of hell 'cause demons and... yeah," Kennedy said with a bit of a whine. "So wait, you're still back on the island, or what? Okay, so not fair, and you, Boy Scout, don't confuse me any more, 'cause far as I'm concerned? I haven't seen anyone from Fandom in a year. When is it for you guys, still?"

"Second week of August," Sookie said with a bright, firm nod. "I've still got 'bout two and a half weeks or so before I head back to the sticks to wait tables and major in psych." She tilted her head, frowning. "It's...when, now? It's been a year since you left? I hate this time stuff."

"Tell me about it," Bobby rolled his eyes. "I was home a couple of weeks ago for almost two months, and then I come back and barely two weeks has passed. I'm just glad phone calls and emails seem to work fine," he didn't exactly know how the phone calls especially didn't get all screwy but he wasn't gonna think too much about it. Safer that way. "I'm thinking of kidnapping her and keeping her in Fandom," he stage-whispered to Kennedy. He'd do no such thing, of course, as much as he wanted more time with Sookie, it wouldn't be fair.

"End of April, almost May," Kennedy confirmed, definitely working a pout now. "Un. Fair, but on the upside the timing kinda works out for you, yeah?"

Bobby's last comment got a slightly crooked smile out of her, though, and she cast one arm around the living room in a showroom kind of gesture. "If you could get away with it I'd say go for it, but, uh... anyway. Welcome to my place, first official houseguests ever. Want me to get your stuff to the guest room for you?"

As attempted subject changes went, that could have been smoother.

"Psh, I can carry some stuff," Sookie said happily, scurrying over to grab some of the bags. "You're the hostess! Give us the tour! Can we go to the park? And the Empire State Building? And the Statue of Liberty? And Ellis Island? And Macy's? Where do they keep the floats when it's not Thanksgiving? Can we go there?"

...someone was going to end up passed out when she finally crashed tonight, at this rate.

Bobby smothered a laugh in one hand at Sookie's enthusiasm. "Might wanna save some stuff for the rest of the week, babe," he suggested.

Kennedy snorted and made a grab for the largest of the bags. "Touring was definitely on the menu, trust me, but I'm supposed to be doing that make-yourselves-at-home thing, right? So let me do this. I got tickets for meta la la Into the Woods for tomorrow, but since Central Park's right, you know, there--" she pointed toward the kitchen window, which supplied a nice view of said park-- "we could do that today and maybe some museums?"

She'd really, really missed them, and found herself grinning as she led the way toward the guest room. "You guys have your own bathroom in there, by the way, and also I have no idea where they keep the floats. Never thought to ask."

Sookie was peeking into rooms curiously, sort of marveling at how big it was. She was sort of aware, in the back of her mind, that she was completely embracing the whole country mouse cliche but she also so, so didn't care.

"Are your parents around?" she asked, raising a brow. "Or your dad, at least? And is anyone gonna mind us sleeping in the same bed and stuff? I mean, that's the kind of thing Gran always frowned on, and while it wasn't an issue with me growin' up, obviously, it was with Jason. And oh oh oh can we go to the library? With the lions out front? I made a list of places I wanna see, if you wanna see it! We don't have to do everything, though. I mean, I'm sure you've seen it all before."
