A simple link opens the floodgates...

Thank you, Anda, for posting this linky.

It is saying what I have been saying for years. Do not torture yourself, eat things in moderation, food is good! Red meat is good, potatoes are nummy, ded-chikins, sushi, margaritas -- all of them are good in moderation.

This link started me thinking on the similarities in strict food diets, and controlling religions. This is just some thoughts that have been sproinging around in my head for a bit, but it took the linky to really bring it to a head.

Note: I can only start to dis on things that I am familiar with. I was raised in the LDS church, and in so doing, they spent so much time brainwashing all of us into how this or that church was not true, after I left that church, I became a devout agnostic. I.. really.. don't.. know... and I really.. don't... care...

Being raised in the Mormon church I often felt that the only reason the Word of Wisdom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_Wisdom was so jammed into our little brains was because a lot of the people that choose that religion is because they want their morals stated for them, they don't want to make the zillions of choices that one is faced with every day, or that they don't have the self-control to keep things in moderation.

So, no caffiene (even though that is now pushed aside due to the LDS church purchasing some Coke product franchises...) no smoking, no drinking alcohol, no premarital sex...

Sounds like a very strict diet huh? Atkin's diet: Basically, a strict regimen of high protein, low low carbs, that, if followed to the extreme, will put the body into a kind of ketoacidosis, which _does_ burn fat, but is HELL on your heart, kidneys, liver and other parts. Why do you think diabetics who haven't controlled their sugars start going into that? Your body is STARVING itself, and is eating its' reserves of fat. That is bad chemicals going into your bloodstream. True, you don't do it for long, but I would rather NOT put my body through that, when simple moderation, more exercise, and a healthy appreciation of the machine that I call my body.

Going back to mormonism now...

When I worked in the nursing home, I found that the *main reason* a lot of older LDS women were in there was because of complications from adult onset diabeties (type II) Usually, it was brought on because they were obese. It caused me to think -- being strict with your life, so strict in fact that you can't have an occasional drink, a romp in bed with a good friend who isn't married to you, experimentation on other no-no's - what have you, that somewhere down the line, you have to indulge in something. True, they might have been pure, and sweet, and angelic, and perhaps have lived longer than the rest of us creatures here, but at what cost? Leg amputations? Blindness? Being too fat from lack of exercise/love of food/laziness that you can't even get out of bed without the help of a human-operated hoist?
There is a statistics page on the bottom of the wikipedia web-page that state that White, LDS folks live longer. I say, Statistics are a way of making numbers lie, and see above to see the results of an extra-long life of doing things "by the book"

Noted: I was raised in AZ, where a good chunk of the year, you DON'T want to be out of the house, because it is too damn hot -- it could be the culture in SouthEastern AZ as well.

I went back in December, and was AMAZED at the size of people... Perhaps I have been lucky to have landed in the Northern CO area -- home of extremely health-conscious people, and a BIG playground in the backyard called the Rockies... but Wow, I felt skinny and athletic when I saw several of my acquaintences that got stuck in that shithole of a place. Starch-bombs. Most, if not all of them. It was scary, mostly because I could see myself in that place had I not left, opened up my horizons, and realized there is MUCH more to life than going to church every Sunday, raising children, and eating metric buttloads of food as a souce of comfort in this crazy world.

Thank you, oh 4 apocolyptic horsemen! You know who you are!!!

Another thing I have noticed about the cult erm I mean religion I was raised in -- They councel young women to look as pretty as they can until they "get married forever n ever in the temple" blah freakin' blah -- but they don't council on what to do after you are married. Women have a tendancy in that religion to let their bodies go to hell, either from having kid after kid after kid, or indulging in the ONLY thing they can indulge in: food. "Why worry, you are already married" was a comment told to me by a young lady when I was jokingly saying I should only eat 1 chocolate years ago...

Jeez.. I am glad I got my head on straight and got out of the brain-washing cult, and didn't start into another one to replace it.
I am also hoping that when I finally do kack-off and take a long-term dirt nap, I do so in an abrupt manner -- and not linger around getting my ass wiped for me by some young 19 year old.

Then again.. I *could* be the nursing home bed-jumper! ;->

/Rant-off
And now, I am going to finish my meal of carb-filled turkey-pot-pie, some nice salad, and a brownie not from Unkle Mag's kitchen.

ahhhh... chocolate makes the soul just a bit lighter.
