So, here we go. Super Tuesday tomorrow. Where a good portion of the country weighs in on who's going to the next President, and the rest of us, well, sit back and watch. There's a kind of tension in all of this that I'm not used to. In truth, I never really paid much attention to the Democratic races in 2004. This is the first time I've actually found attached to what happens. It's a bit unnerving, to tell you the truth. It's a real adjustment, learning to believe in things.
Guess I've made it clear by now that I'm rooting for Obama at this point. I've been trying to put into words exactly why. Policy-wise, he and Hillary seem pretty similar to me (someone out there, please correct me if I'm wrong). And, to be honest, I wouldn't say that I see Mrs. Clinton being all that horrible of a President. She'd have an uphill battle, and with a name like Clinton she'd never be able to get the Republicans behind her, even when it was for the good of the country. (People seem to have this almost personal hatred of her... as if they were somebody they knew and immediately disliked. Even if there's no rational reason for it. Probably the influence of the Republican machine during her husband's years in office, I suppose.) But she does have experience, and has been doing this a long time, and there are worst things than having an old hand at the wheel to weather a bad storm.
Well...
Maybe what it really comes down to is that I'm kind of tired of Presidential dynasties. I don't think the same old will cut it any longer.
And as horrific as these past couple of years have been... the conservatives aren't going away. They're a part of this country, too. Part of its strength, whether we like to admit it or not. And if America's going to recover from this long blight on its history -- on its honor -- it's going to need a president capable of drawing on that side of the country. Somehow.
... so, ultimately, guess I'm just young enough to stake my chances on a risk. On a long shot. Because I don't see how else we're going to make it.
Here's hoping the rest of the country sees things the same way.
