Good Things.

So, some things to be thankful for:

1. We discovered this morning that we can use the upstairs and downstairs showers at the same time without serious problems. Flushing the downstairs toilet makes the upstairs shower go hot for a second or so, but we are otherwise dual-shower-capable! Woot!

2. Speaking of showers... I think I "found God" while in the shower this morning.

Now wait, wa-a-a-ait... wait. Hear me out. This is really just a bit of a paradigm shift: I realized that Science has become my religion. It sounds like an oxymoron, but here are my thoughts: "God", and religion, were created by humans as a way to make sense of their world. That was a long time ago, and since then we've developed the Scientific Method - the Holy Trinity of Hypothesis, Test, and Repeat - to prove or disprove a lot of those things, in ways that are logical, demonstrable, repeatable, and capable of being understood by rational human beings the world over, regardless of our differences.

Science is really God v2.0.

I have a great deal of faith in Science to guide me along the right path towards truth and enlightenment. I believe in Science even when I see things that seem to go against it - and in the end I always believe that Science will prevail. The difference is that I understand Science, at least in concept, while no one can claim to understand God v1.xx (a distinct "feature" of the OS).

The REASON for adopting this mental shift is this: Anytime someone argues any point on the basis of the bible (or torah or koran or whatever other wonderful other bit of pulp fiction they've been reading) which is clearly some ancient "opinion" with no basis in informed fact, simply state that your religion states otherwise. It's a way to compete with them on a level playing field in terms they can (read: are willing to) understand (and which will be similarly frustrating - which is a key feature). Furthermore their god - God v1.0 or v1.1 (Jehovah) or v1.2 (Allah) or v1.3 (Christian) or v1.3.1 (Catholic) or v1.3.2 (Protestant) or v1.6.wft (Scientology), etc., whatever - is old and outdated, and no longer compatible with the new God 2.0.

So, they can claim that their god is the right god, but their reason for doing so is the same as mine: faith. They BELIEVE really, really hard that their god must be right. Well, I BELIEVE really, really hard that my god is right. Their god has millions of followers - so does mine (many of them strangely the same - dual boot systems of some sort). And so on.

(The upshot of all this: I am amused.)

3. I got some useful stuff done yesterday, despite a little frustration: Went to the nearby library to get a library card, which they wouldn't give me without ID that had my new address on it; so went to the Ministry of Transportation (also nearby), got there 2 minutes before closing, and had my Driver's License address changed; bought some assorted light bulbs we'd been needing at the Canadian Tire next door to the MTO; bought ingredients for supper and for fruitcake at the grocery store nearby; went BACK to the library before it closed, and got a library card; and went home to make a delicious supper omelette for Alex and myself, slightly spicy, filled with chicken and yellow peppers, and topped with brie and avocado; and then made candied orange peel for the fruitcake, cut up the fruit, and started soaking it all in Bourbon overnight - so it'll be ready to bake tonight.

4. Tonight we're working on getting the main floor of the new house looking good, prior to having a few friends over. I'm putting holes in the wall for my part: hanging curtains, hanging art, hanging a spice rack (which I need to get from IKEA), mounting the fire extinguisher somewhere, and anchoring a couple shelving units to the wall. Also hoping to make the fruitcake (need to get pistachios for this), and re-org the kitchen a bit to finish putting all of my stuff away. If I have time I might also get a 3-way switch and rewire a couple of switches so that the stairs to the basement have a light switch at both ends (which they currently do not).

(The last item is a "good thing" because a) I'm feeling capable of such tasks again, and b) it's progress towards getting the place in order after the move! I just need to be careful not to take on too much stuff.)

I thought I had another "Good Thing" but I forget now what it was - in any case, this will do for now.
