A Meme I Had to Think About.

Jul 03, 2008 16:46

So, this one's going around, and I've been thinking about it since I first saw it, but it's actually really sort of hard to come up with 3 truly unique things - most of the really good ones I share with at least one other person on my friends list:

Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done.

See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another! (2.b., 2.c., etc...) (*)

Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

I'm trying to come up with some interesting ones, without making them overly-specific just to force the uniqueness - so I'm just brainstorming here. I'll leave all of them, we'll see which get crossed out when I find that someone else has done them:

1. Was the male "Maid of Honour" at a wedding. (Including assisting with the wedding shower, and going skinny-dipping with the female "Best Man" after the ceremonies, which took forever, and were on the hottest day of that entire summer!)

2. Lived in 7 different places in the course of an 8-month period. (That's 7 different buildings/addresses, 4 different cities, 2 different provinces.)

3. Made the wedding cake for a friend's wedding. (I'm talkin' a serious wedding cake, not just Betty-Crocker-after-a-trip-to-the-Justice-of-the-Peace: 2 tiers, with the top one on liqueur-glass pillars, made of fruitcake (per the British tradition), with buttercream frosting, and decorated with real nasturtium flowers and leaves! Was fuzzmonster and saviolo's wedding. Lots of wedding things!)

4. Sewed myself a suit. (Like, a suit jacket and slacks, not a fursuit - though I've also done that, I'm not unique for it, not here!)

5. Successfully bow-hunted for deer. (My dad is an avid hunter, and raised me as such; we did make good use of the deer meat and hide, but I don't hunt any more.)

6. Got the 4th highest score in my province in the standardized high school mathematics tests, and was invited to try out for the Mathematics Olympics (which I did)! (I didn't even know there were Mathematics Olympics before that - they were held in Sweden that year, but I didn't qualify.) Shared with taral, at least the "trying out for the Math Olympics" part! (Also edited to qualify that I did actually try out - I didn't just decline the invitation.)

7. Fell through the ice one winter, climbed out of the frigid water, crawled to shore, and bicycled about 1/2 mile to get home in well-below-freezing temperatures. (And didn't die!)

8. Moved someone to tears with a song I had written. (Best moment of my life thus far, I think. Thanks, darkwolph.)

9. Discovered that the centre of a Sierpiński hexagon (which I created by writing an elementary program to generate it, building on the knowledge I'd gained generating Sierpiński triangles and carpets) is a Koch snowflake. (This was in 1991, when the field of chaos and fractals was suddenly rejuvenated by the life-giving computational power of the computer. I never reported or published this anywhere, but I've also never seen it noted anywhere, and made the discovery on my own, which was a pretty cool feeling. I'm sure someone else has discovered and recorded it by now. Would love a reference if anyone's seen it mentioned!)

Some of my favourite also-rans:

s. Played (with my band) in a bar, and had the whole audience singing along as they totally rocked out! (It was a thoroughly amazing moment - it was on stage at Healey's in Toronto, and the song was "Angel of Harlem" by U2. I'm gettin' chills thinking about it.) (Shared with funkdooby. I remember danruk was in the audience, probably a few others.)

t. Jumped out of a perfectly good airplane! (Shared with funkdooby and kachera, and also kfops, as I recently found out because of this meme - he had to find another unique thing he'd done!)

u. Mile-high club, baby! (Shared with damaron - among others, I'm sure. :)

v. Welcomed a New Year on top of the abandoned Molson Brewery in Toronto. (Which was pretty nifty!) (Shared with pouch and funkdooby, and I think maybe rudytuesday?)

w. Explored a long-abandoned insane asylum, late at night. (Significant levels of creepiness!) (Shared with pouch and probably also avwolf.)

x. Had a photo of me, marching naked in the Pride parade, published in Toronto Life magazine as part of their "Top 10 Worst of Toronto" that year. (Shared with silfur. I need a copy of this magazine for my memoirs. Anyone?)

y. Raised money for breast cancer research by running about 12km around Toronto in a pink dress. (Shared with saviolo.)

z. Went "watersliding" down a natural waterfall/rapids. (It was fun, despite several scrapes and bruises, and a big scratch on a brand-new watch.) (Shared with xeonbunny.)

Well, done work, so I guess I'm done this meme for now! :) Tell me which things are not unique, I'll cross them off and give you props.

B.
