It was dark. Pitch black actually. Ianto had lost his torch. His eyes hurt from trying to focus and his ears strained to hear any noise from Jack or the weevil they were tracking.

He knew it was his fault that he’d lost track of Jack and the weevil, and lost his torch. But there was nothing he could do to change that.

He kept on walking. He was in a sewer and he stepped as lightly as possible, listening out for any danger. The weevil wasn’t exactly safe. It had recently gone on a rampage and Jack said it was vital they caught it and got it safely back to the cells.

They’d been chasing it. Ianto had stumbled, lost his torch and lost sight of Jack’s torch as his captain had run off into the darkness.

Ianto stopped and sighed, fighting the urge to lean against the wall. He knew it would be filthy. He didn’t know the way out. He tapped his Bluetooth but once again there was no response. No signal.

“Fuck,” he murmured.

Suddenly, he heard a noise,  a footstep. It was close to him, moving closer to him. Ianto held his breath and strained his ears to hear. He put his hand on his gun.

There it was again, a heavy footstep, very close to him now. He wanted to call for Jack but he knew it would do no good.

He pressed his lips tightly together and tried to ignore his itching fingers. His breath came heavy, though he tried to control it.

Suddenly, he could feel another body close to him. He wanted to move back, get away, but if it was the weevil and he ran, it would definitely chase him.

He took a slow step backwards, wishing he still had the weevil spray on him. The other body moved with him and suddenly, his arm was grabbed in a firm grip. Instinctively, Ianto began to fight, pulling back hard against the rough hold.

“Hey, calm down,” said a familiar voice.

“J…Jack?”

“Yeah, who’d you think it was?” Jack said, coming closer.

“You twat, I thought it was a weevil stalking me.”

Jack chuckled. “Aww, you scared of the big bad weevil?”

Ianto hit him on the arm. “Not funny, Jack.”

Jack laughed again and pulled Ianto a little closer. Ianto could feel the heat of Jack beside him.

“Where’s the weevil gone? Did you get it?”

“Yeah. Knocked it out with the spray, got it in the SUV. That’s when I realised you were still down here. You all right?”

“Yeah. Apart from my heart attack.”

Jack chuckled and pulled Ianto right into his arms. “You lose your torch?” he asked into Ianto’s hair.

“Yeah. Do you know the way out of here?”

“Yeah, but, there’s no rush, is there?”

Ianto pulled back and looked at the grey shadow which was Jack’s face. “What do you mean?” he asked suspiciously.

He felt Jack shrug. “Just thought we’d take advantage of being alone.”

Ianto raised his eyebrow, although Jack couldn’t see it. “I see. In a dark, smelly, sewer?”

Jack shrugged again. “I’ve fucked you in worse places.”

“Jack, you’re…you’re…”

“What?” Jack asked and Ianto could practically hear his impish grin.

“Incorrigible.”

“But you love me!”

Ianto suddenly couldn’t breathe.

Jack laughed off the awkward moment. “Come on, Ianto, be a sport.”

Ianto put his hands on Jack’s chest. “Let’s get that weevil in the cells, then we can get up to some ‘sport’. We’ll still be alone.”

Jack huffed, but obediently, took Ianto’s hand in his big strong one. “Come on then, my boy. This way.”

Ianto let Jack lead him down the dark tunnels. He trusted Jack completely.

After several minutes, Ianto spotted light above them and then they were climbing up the ladder and out of the manhole at the top.

Ianto shielded his eyes against the bright street lamp. There was the SUV, with the Weevil locked up in the back, still unconscious.

“Did you leave a window cracked?” Ianto asked.

Jack grinned back at him. “There’s air conditioning. Come on, let’s get back then. The sooner we get him locked away, the sooner I’ll be able to do something about this hard-on.”

Ianto rolled his eyes. “You’re always hard, Jack.”

Jack grinned. “Only when you’re around, wiggling your ass in those cute suits.”

“I thought we agreed to leave the rhymes to me.”

“Sorry, babe.”

“Don’t start with the ‘babe’. You know I hate that.”

“So many rules with you,” Jack complained, opening the passenger side door for Ianto. Ianto rolled his eyes but climbed in.

Jack hurried around to the other side, got in and started up the engine.

“Seat belt,” chided Ianto.

Jack rolled his eyes. “I can’t die.”

“No, but if we crash, you can get thrown through the window and I’m not taking it to the garage again.”

Jack rolled his eyes and buckled his seat belt.

Ianto watched Jack as they drove back to the hub. Jack was so strong, so huge in Ianto’s life. Ianto knew how he felt about Jack and sometimes he thought Jack knew too. But they never spoke about it. Ianto knew they never would.

Ianto didn’t mind. In a way, he liked it. There was no pressure with Jack, no discussion of feelings. They just had a good time and that was it. It was simple and uncomplicated.

“You all right?” Jack asked, glancing at him.

Ianto smiled. “Yeah.”

Jack grinned. “Okay. You’d tell me if you weren’t though, right?”

“Of course.”

Jack raised his eyebrows. “You don’t always though, do you. Before, in the tunnel…”

“Jack…”

“What?”

“Don’t. Don’t go on about it.”

“Okay. Were you scared? Alone in the dark?”

“I…well, the adrenaline was going.”

Jack grinned. “I like it when your adrenaline is going. I’m sorry I left you.”

“That’s all right. I managed. I’m a big boy.”

“You’re still my boy and I want to look after you.”

“I’m also a member of the team and you have to let me pull my weight.”

Jack grinned salaciously. “You can pull my weight any time you like.”

Ianto gave him a look.

Jack shrugged apologetically. “Sorry. Okay, no jokes. I know what you’re saying.”

Ianto smiled back at him. “It’s all right. Most of the time, you do right. You don’t let us get in the way of the job and that’s the right thing to do.”

“Yeah. You worry me sometimes, Ianto, when I see you in danger, I have to fight to control myself. That time in that warehouse, when those meat guys had you, all I wanted to do was do what Gwen did and rush forwards to rescue you.”

“I saw you looking at me, saw you trying to work out if I was okay.”

“You were doing good. I could see you were scared. I could see in your eyes you were scared, but you didn’t panic. You stayed calm, did what you had to do.”

“And so did you, Jack. I want you to always do what you have to do. You’re the leader. You have to do what’s right for the team.”

Jack hummed a little and Ianto could see he was thinking hard.

They didn’t talk again until they’d got the weevil into its cell and settled. Then, Jack took Ianto’s hand and they walked back into the main area of the hub.

“Come on,” said Jack. “Time for bed.”

“Do you ever go to bed when I’m not here?”

“Nope. I stay up and work all night.”

“I’m glad I’m here with you so often then.”

Jack chuckled. “Yeah, me too.”

They got down into Jack’s quarters and Jack turned Ianto to face him. “Do you really want me to act like I don’t care about you when we’re in a situation like that?”

Ianto shrugged. “Well, it’s probably not a good idea to let kidnappers know that the person they’ve kidnapped is important to you.”

“Well, no, but. Well, you are important to me, you know. I know I don’t show it a lot but I really do...”

Ianto smiled. “I know, Jack. I wouldn’t be with you if I didn’t know that.”

“I know there are some things we don’t talk about. Maybe that’s right, or…maybe it’s wrong, I dunno but, I need  you to remember that you’re important, even if I never say it. And I think, maybe, you know how I feel about you, though I can’t say it.”

“Jack, don’t say. I know,” Ianto whispered and pulled Jack close for a deep kiss.
