Ianto was startled out of a light sleep by his da opening his door. He threw off his blanket and sat up.

“Da?”

“We need to talk, Ianto.” Iestyn turned Ianto’s desk chair to face the bed and sat on it. “Where’ve you got this stuff about Jack being evil?”

“John told me.”

“Who’s John?” Iestyn asked, frowning.

Ianto hesitated. “He’s…my guardian angel. He looks after me. He…he’s been sent to look after me.”

“Is that who you were with when you bunked off work?”

“Yeah. He knows what’s best for me. He’s looking after me. He’s my angel.”

“If anybody is an angel in all of this, it’s Jack. He’s done you good, so many times. What’s this John ever done? Made you skip out on work? I’d say your behaviour recently is down to him too. You’ve been a complete brat recently and I’m putting the blame on his shoulders.”

“You don’t know anything!” Ianto shouted. “You don’t give a fuck about me! John does. He’s going to take me away from all this shit. He’s going to look after me. And you and Jack can fuck off!”

Iestyn leapt to his feet so fast that the chair toppled over. “Don’t you dare speak like that. Apologise, right now or by God, I will belt you so hard you won’t be able to sit for two weeks.”

Ianto didn’t say anything.

Iestyn glared at him. “I am waiting.”

Ianto felt the fear constrict his insides. He lowered his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

Iestyn straightened his shirt and let out a harsh breath. “That’s better. Now, you think on, my boy. No matter what Jack says, if you carry on with this attitude, I will be forced to take action and give you the discipline you need. Understand? I want you behaving impeccably from now on.”

Ianto’s heart was hammering in his chest. He kept looking at the floor. “Yes, Da.”

“Good.”

His da turned and walked out of the room. Ianto was left alone with his thoughts. He wanted to behave, he did. He wanted to do things right but it never seemed to work. He’d wanted to eat his tea but…he just couldn’t. And then there was John and the Captain. His angel and his Captain.

His breath caught in his throat. No, the Captain, not his. John was his angel and that was all that mattered.

Ianto wanted to be with John. He wanted his guardian angel. He got up and put the chair back where it should go. He put his jacket on, grabbed his wallet and his cigarettes and tiptoed downstairs. His da didn’t appear and Ianto sneaked out. His angel would come for him, he would.

He began to walk. John would find him. He would. He’d come to him really soon. He didn’t care how long he had to wait. He knew John would come for him.

He stopped and sat down on a wall nearby. He took out his cigarettes and lit one. He sat, smoking and brooding. John would come soon. He would.

“You okay, soldier?”

Ianto’s head snapped up and he glared at the Captain. “What do you want? Get lost.”

The Captain sat on the wall beside him on the wall. “What are you doing out here?”

“Waiting for John. He’ll come soon.”

“So, you’re just going to wait out here in the middle of the night, smoking, until he happens to walk by.”

“Who the hell are you anyway?”

The Captain smiled. “Jack. You’ve met me quite a few times now.”

“My da said you helped me.”

“That’s right.”

“What did you do exactly?”

“What do you remember?”

Ianto frowned. “Nothing. You just told me…You told me I wouldn’t behave badly if I was your responsibility.”

“Where were you?”

“I …” Ianto frowned. It was fuzzy. “I was in a cell.” He looked at Jack. “You were … outside the cell, doing something and … I … I was in trouble ‘cause I’d been smoking and drinking and running off and skipping school and … I kicked you.”

Jack smiled. “Yeah, you were very naughty. But I helped you out, made it better then took you home. Do you remember that?”

“You gave me a drink and I fell asleep.”

“Um, yeah. What else do you remember?”

“You said there was something wrong with me and that I’d feel better after you helped me. You said I could trust you and … you let me keep my mam.” He hesitated. “I …” He looked at Jack, frowning. “I don’t understand.”

Jack looked back at him with a mild expression. “Do you have your blue orb with you, Ianto?”

“Yes, I always … keep it close to me. I don’t know …”

“Can I see it please?”

Ianto frowned. “You can’t touch it.”

“I just want to look at it.”

Still frowning, Ianto put his hand in his jacket pocket and took out the orb. He kept this in his jacket, had done since leaving school. And before that, he’d kept it in his blazer pocket. At home, he kept it on his bedside table. But, no matter what, it had been with him since the day his mam had got sick.

He held the orb in both hands and let Jack look at it.

“Do you remember what this is, Ianto?”

“My mam.” He stopped and stared at Jack. “What…?”

Jack smiled at him. “You’re right, Ianto. Your mam is in there and she’s looking after you. If you couldn’t trust me, she’d let you know.”

Ianto frowned at him. “Yeah.”

Jack reached out and placed his hand lightly over Ianto’s and the orb. The orb began to get warm and it glowed faintly blue between their fingers.

“See that, Ianto? What do you think that means?”

Ianto pulled the orb away and put it back in his pocket. “Okay, so maybe you’re all right. Why do you want to help me?”

“Because I know John. I’ve known him for a long time and he is not to be trusted. You understand?”

Ianto looked down. “He said he’s from God.”

“Ianto, why would God send you someone who makes you do things that are bad for you?”

“I dunno.”

“Ianto, do you believe God loves you?”

“Yes, but he sent John to look after me.”

“You don’t need anybody to look after you, Ianto, not like that. You don’t need someone to control you, to make you do things. You need to be making your own decisions.”

“I want to but…when John is close to me, I just…I do what he says. It’s like I can’t help it.”

“But you don’t obey your dad.”

“I want to. I try but I…it just doesn’t work.”

“Why do you think that is?”

“I don’t know. I just…I can’t eat and that makes him get mad and recently, I…since I met John, I…I talk back and…I’ve been skipping work and John said it was all right.”

Jack stood up. “You remember me telling you before how you wouldn’t behave like this if you were my responsibility?”

Ianto looked up at him. “Yes.”

“Then listen to me. I want you to go home and go to bed. Are you in work tomorrow?”

Ianto shook his head. “No.”

“Then I want you to meet me here at nine in the morning. Eat breakfast before you come out and don’t go with John.”

Ianto blinked, then stood. “Okay. I’ll…see you tomorrow then.”

Jack smiled at him. “Good. Sleep well.”

Ianto walked away, feeling Jack’s eyes on him as he went.
