Jack was proud of his team, especially of Tosh. He’d worked with her and they’d got his wrist strap functional. Exactly how it worked was still somewhat of a mystery to her, which she couldn’t stand but he couldn’t explain it to her since he didn’t understand it perfectly himself. They were pretty sure they’d set it to Newport when Ianto had been nineteen years old and to the date Ianto had specified. But there was a significant margin for error.
Jack was worried about Ianto accompanying him but Ianto was adamant. Maybe it was for the best. He’d be able to keep an eye on Ianto in both time periods this way.
Jack found himself standing at the gates to a small park in Newport. Ianto seemed to know it well.
“It's not changed much,” Ianto said, looking round.
Jack glanced at him. “Hmm?”
Ianto didn’t look at him. “In five years. I’ve not been here since…”
“Since you were nineteen?” said Jack, having done the maths.
Ianto took a deep breath. “I guess it's time to go then.”
“Yeah.” Jack grasped hold of Ianto’s arm and placed his hand on his wrist. “You need to stay close.”
Ianto, reluctantly, stepped closer. Jack pressed a few buttons on his strap and felt Ianto’s hand grip him tighter as they were jerked into the vortex.
Travelling via the vortex manipulator always gave Jack the feeling of being picked up by his coat collar by a giant hand in the sky and being yanked through the sky and dropped. Invariably, it was always onto a hard surface.
Jack picked himself up and looked around. It was evening and they were still in the park, which was empty. It looked no different.
Ianto scrambled to his feet and swayed suddenly. Jack grasped his arm and held him steady.
“Careful, now. Time travel isn’t easy on the stomach.” He took a small water bottle out of his pocket and passed it over to Ianto. “Drink. It’s got peppermint in it. It’ll help.”
Ianto nodded and tugged his arm away and began to drink, supporting himself on the park fence rather than Jack.
After a few minutes of sipping the water, Ianto recovered and stood up straight. “Right, are we in the right time, do you think?”
“No idea. You know the area, what do you think?”
Ianto looked around and shrugged. “As I said, this place doesn’t really change. I’ll go and have a look around.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“No, you stay here. I…came here a lot at that age. Keep an eye out. I won’t be long.”
Jack watched Ianto walk away. He seemed so far away right now. Jack had to stop John, no matter what it took. If he didn’t stop him, he’d lose Ianto. He might not ever have existed for him.
Suddenly, he realised there was someone in the park. He ducked out of sight and watched the young man stomping across the grass. He stared. It was Ianto. Nineteen year old Ianto, dressed in jeans and a hoodie, smoking.
The park may not have changed but Ianto certainly had. The Ianto he knew would never smoke. It was strange seeing Ianto like this. He seemed…troubled. Ianto never talked about his past, at least not to Jack.
“Hey, kiddo, you all right?”
Jack frowned. Who was that, speaking to Ianto the way Jack did? He scowled. It was John Hart. Ianto smiled at John and they began to talk. Jack wished he was close enough to hear what they were saying.
John leaned forwards and kissed Ianto. Jack felt his heart pounding in his chest. How dare he. How dare he even touch Ianto.
They spoke some more, then John seized Ianto in a hard, possessive kiss and Ianto yielded to him completely.
Jack didn’t stop to think. He strode forwards, yanked John away from Ianto and threw a punch at John. It hit John directly on the mouth and John laughed.
“Jack! Thought you’d show up sooner or later.”
Jack grabbed him by the collar, ready to kick him but suddenly, different hands gripped him and yanked him away from John.
“Get the fuck off him!” yelled a familiar voice.
Jack found him face to face with Ianto, nineteen years old and filled with fury. He threw punches and kicks at Jack and Jack backed off.
John grinned, put his arm around Ianto and pulled him close. “That’ll do, my boy,” he said to Ianto and kissed his brow. “Come on.” He took Ianto by the hand and led him away. Ianto went willingly and didn’t even glance back at Jack.
Jack sighed and turned. Ianto, his Ianto, was standing there glaring at him.
“Well, that was clever,” he drawled.
Jack shrugged. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself.”
Ianto sighed. “I know but…it won’t have helped. Come on. I’ve got us a room at the B&B down the road.”
“That was quick.”
Ianto grinned. “You know I’m good.”
Jack smiled gratefully. It was good to see Ianto smile at him like that. It seemed like a very long time since he’d seen Ianto smile.
“Lead the way then.”
Ianto led him to the B&B. When Jack followed Ianto into the room, his chest constricted. Ianto had got them twin beds. Not that Jack was expecting them to be shagging each other every night but, it stung a bit that Ianto didn’t want to cuddle up to him in bed as usual.
But they had a job to do here. This wasn’t a holiday. He sat on his bed and considered the situation. Ianto sat on the window sill and looked out.
“Right, so when are we exactly?” Jack asked.
“Well, seeing as we saw John with me, we’re in the right time.”
“Do you remember today?”
Ianto frowned. “I don’t…I remember going to visit…erm…someone. We always went…visiting on Sunday.”
Jack nodded. He guessed it was his mam Ianto went to see. Jack knew how Ianto’s mam was, what had happened when Ianto was just a kid. Ianto didn’t know he knew.
Ianto wasn’t looking at him. “It’s all fuzzy. Da and I…had a fight and I took off. I went to the park. And then…I remember hanging out, having a smoke, then going home but…I remember John coming and then…” He shuddered. “What he said about you…”
“What? What did he say about me?”
Ianto folded his arms tight across his chest and wouldn’t answer.

Ianto leaned heavily against John as they walked from the park. “Who was that man?”
John held him tight. “He’s evil, Ianto. He’s been sent to take you away from me.” He stopped walking and looked firmly at Ianto. “He’s from the devil, Ianto. Don’t trust him.”
Ianto looked into John’s eyes. John touched his cheek and Ianto started to feel wobbly. He reached up and held onto his cross. “Don’t trust him,” he repeated.
John gave him a smile. “That’s right. Don’t trust him. Trust me. Just me.”
Ianto gazed at him. “Just you.”
John’s smile widened and he leaned in and kissed Ianto deeply.
