And yes, Rick Riordan is the author of Percy Jackson. The Red Pyramid is based on Egyptian mythology. A brother and sister discover they're descendants from powerful royal families after their father unleashes 5 Egyptian gods. 1 of the gods, Set, is going to destroy the world if they don't stop him first.

i'm currently in the middle of everything is illuminated, which is about a guy who goes looking for the family that helped his grandfather escape the nazis during WWII; he searches with his guide, a ukrainian translator who totally (and hilariously) butchers english, the guide's cranky grandfather, and the latter's dog, sammy davis, junior, junior.
i've been really curious about the the girl with the dragon tattoo, because i've seen so many people reading it, and i think they just made a film out of it. well, now i know that i'm probably not missing much ( ... )

Percy Jackson is next on my list. And they also highly recommend Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz which is the first in a series of about 8 books about a character called Alex Rider.
These might be a little young for your liking but I take their recommendations on board as they are a class that love reading and generally read teenage fiction.
Enjoy!
