Yuletide Letter '10

Dear Yuletide Authour,

I am so excited to be participating in Yuletide again this year. Last year was great, and I imagine this one will be as well. I love all of these fandoms dearly, so simply the fact that you enjoy them enough to write something in them will make me exceedingly gleeful. I promise.

I like my fic to be canon-compliant whenever possible. Don't let that stop you from tweaking or bending canon--I just prefer it not to be broken irreparably. Characterization is really important to me. I love banter and in-depth character studies. My tastes lean toward the non-heteronormative when it comes to relationships, and I also enjoy character rich gen.

The only things that will really turn me off a fic are mpreg and character bashing.

Onto the requests.

Michael Chabon - The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
Request Character: Sam Clay
Request Detail: I'd love to see a fic that explores Sam's family life with Rosa and how they both cope with that situation, or deals with the one-sided crush the text suggests Sam has on Joe, or some little moment that fleshes out his relationship with Tracy. But really, absolutely anything featuring Sam will make me happy.

I cannot fully express how deeply this book moved me and of all the brilliant characters it contains Sam Clay was the one who stole my heart. I love the details in it, and all the references to comic book culture and history that are littered throughout the text. Chabon's prose is something that constantly inspires me to practice the craft of writing.

Anyway, like I said, anything you write with Sam Clay in it will make me happy. One of the short stories Chabon published, an extra chapter from the book that didn't make the final cut, was called "Breakfast in the Wreck". It was about Sam Clay meeting up with one of Tommy's elementary school teachers, who he's having an affair with, at a run down little diner. It was short, and sweet, and made me want to know so much more about Sam's life when Joe isn't around. I can't find a link to it, but it's a perfect example of the sort of little story that would make me grin. Of course, I want to know so much more about what Sam thinks of Joe and their relationship to, so whichever of those options moves you.

I can't stress enough though that anything you write that expands on his life will make me joyful.

The Fall (2006)
Request Character: Darwin
Request Detail: There are some great stories out there set in the "real world" of the hospital, but I'd really love to see one that takes place mainly in the world of the story. Darwin's my favorite of the bandits, but they're all awesome. Do the bandits know they're in a story? Do they have complete back-stories, or can they only remember what Roy makes up?

This is one of my favorite films. I love the way it talks about story-telling, and its visuals are obviously stunning. I've always been a bit distressed by how little fic there is set in the bandit's world though. I loved Darwin the best of them, (and Wallace was adorable, obviously) but anything that explores this world in more depth would make me exceedingly happy.

I think it could be really interesting to explore something kind of metafictional with this, does one of the characters know they're in a story? How do the rules of the world change because it is a fictional invention? But that could just be the English Major in me talking, and a simple story exploring that world and the characters in it would be just as fantastic as one that got all meta-y.

Ex Machina
Request Character: Mitchell Hundred, Rick Bradbury
Request Detail: I'd love a fic exploring the relationship between these two men further. Either a detail from their past, or what happens to them in the future. Did they express their desire for each other once, get embarrassed and never speak about it again? Are things ever fixed between them? What happens to Bradbury after the close of the comic?

Brian K. Vaughan is a master of narrative. I am continually stunned by his work. Reading the final scene between Hundred and Bradbury in this comic was one of the most intense emotional experiences I've had in recent memory. (It was like it was written to push all of my buttons.) And Bradbury was my favorite in the comic for a good long while. (He also pushes all of my under-appreciated side kick archetype buttons, see the next request for more details.) I want to know more about him. I want to know more about Hundred. Anything you conjure up about them and their relationship will make me happy.

I'm particularly interested in the time they both spent working with Kremlin. What kind of wacky adventures did they go on? And what was the dynamic between Hundred and Bradbury like back then?

As with the other prompts, I will certainly love anything you choose to write about Bradbury in this setting.

The Tick
Request Character: Arthur
Request Detail: I love Arthur. A day in his life, his musings about his relationship to the Tick, any little thing about him will please me. Bonus points for some preposterous hero-worship (that might bit just the tiniest bit homoerotic).

So, as mentioned above, underappreciated sidekick? Totally my weak spot. (I blame my teenage love of Sam Gamgee.) So that Arthur gets to be put-upon, and funny, and a little cranky is great. I'm familiar with all of The Tick canons (cartoon, comic, and live-action), so feel free to reference what ever inspires you. Like with most of the rest of my requests I'd really love to just know more about Arthur's life. How does he feel about living with the Tick? What was it like the first time he put on that suit?

Basically, Arthur is too adorable for words and I just want to spend my days reading about the wacky adventures he goes on (with or without the Tick).

One quick note: my internet access will be vaguely spotty over Winter Break, so if I don't reply promptly it's not cuz I don't love it, it's cuz I can't get at the internet (though I'll be trying desperately).

I hope you have fun writing, I can't wait to read whatever you produce!

yuletide, the fall, amazing adventures of kavalier and clay, the tick, ex machina, chabon
