so, say 15 years from now belle and sebastian are on tour but murdoch is the only original member. do i go? this is where my minor in philosphy finally gets put to use.
i used to argue how can you be a fan of a sports team year in and year out when the roster of these teams changes every year if not within the season. a few years back, jerry rice, one the most adored san francisco 49ers players for over a decade switched teams and went to of all teams the oakland raiders. so for all these years were you a 49er fan or a jerry rice fan? ive spoke with guys who say they are fans of players and follow them from team to team. i figure when youre the fan of a team, youre a fan of an idea of the team. its in our nature to enjoy grouping and socializing and being a fan is just that.
am i a james band fan or am i a roger moore/sean connery/tim dalton/remington steele fan. though i find nothing particularily great about any of the movies i find nothing wrong with the use of different actors in such an iconic role. i like the idea of different actors portraying batman. but then as an old time comic reader i followed writers from book to book instead of avidly following characters. but could someone else portray indian jones other than ford (or phoenix). I think jude law could.
i dont think anyone else could play jack bauer as well as keifer has. and dr who will lways be tom baker to me. but mulder and scully could be re-invented.
recently, 'the doors of 21st century' were going toplay in reno. obviously they didnt have that inflated ego known as jim morrison singing. i believe they had ian astbury from the cult doing vocals which i think is a fair substitute. when the beach boys play here, whats actually left in the band? for a while werent there two pink floyds? as if one wasnt pretensious enough for the planet. sometimes mickey thomas starship blows through here. whats left in that band? the dead played on, they just werent grateful. navaro joined rhcp and they finally put out a couple songs i liked. whats journey with out perry? or without schon? a band can play on ask ac/dc. if we heard our favorite song we would like it. if we were then told it was a cover by a very precise but different band we would be dissapointed. i dont think i can really apply this to the music i adore. so if 20 yeras from now i get a chance to go see belle and sebastian featuring stevie jackson and the worlds most competent studio musicians replicating perfectly the songs from the first few albums how can i not enjoy it, right?
