I remember Kiki's Delivery Service as my very first anime; and I can remember that I didn't even know what anime was at the time. I was probably in first or second grade. I'd wager closer to first, though. I was amazed by the artwork and the cute characters that somehow stood high above the Disney characters many people love so much. Many of

Oh, yeah.
Castle in the Sky is Studio Ghibli. I would also recommend Whisper of the Heart, an almost prequel to Return of the Cat. Other Ghibli titles worth mentioning: Porco Rosso, My Neighbours the Yamadas, Only Yesterday, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, and Princess Mononoke (released through Miramax).
Do you watch TV series?
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Noein, Lucky Star, Evangelion, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, Grenadier, DearS, the Gundam series are all worth mentioning.
My own Anime revelation:
I had watched crappy Sailor Moon reruns during my midnight computing blitzes, and thought I was familiar with the form, lame though it was. When I saw the OVA Gunbuster: Aim for the TOP, it blew me away.
Gunbuster starts as a girls high school comedy tribute to a 70s tennis anime Aim for the Ace, and them becomes a space-war saga with the truest use of spacetime dislocation in science fiction. The characters lose loves and friends as the battle carries them further away from Earth in space and time. Because my daughter was the same age as the protagonist as the story begins, the loss of her father tore into my heart and I was changed. I got Anime. Gunbuster is my Rosetta Stone for Anime.

I have yet to see a single Ghibli film you recommended; but I hope to change that dramatically very soon~ (hope veoh has 'em)
As for the TV series; I LOVE FMA and sometimes Inuyasha... I haven't watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Noein, Lucky Star, Evangelion, Grenadier, DearS, or the Gundam series, however... I think I'll look into them in that order...
I have, however, recently fallen in love with Gravitation; as sad as that is. D:<
Gunbuster? O:
Is this a movie or a series?
