Public service announcement: If you read and loved the Phillip Pullman book The Golden Compass, do not - I repeat stringently DO NOT - go see the movie.
The actors were great. The art and costumes rocked. The CG daemon animals were awesome. But overall, it was so,so bad. :-(
The pacing sucked. Thought they did stick very closely to canon, they cut HUGE swaths through the background material. At one point I leaned over to Alida and asked her how bad the wind burn on my face was from the rushing of the story. The worst part though was the stilted, abrupt and misplaced end. Seriously, they left out the full last quarter of the book. Lyra, Roger, Iorek, Lee Scoresby and Serafina are all in Lee's airship headed off to catch up with Lord Azriel, and it just ends there. I could not believe what I was seeing. Or what I wasn't, I guess. The screen went dark and the music starts and the first credit pops up, and I just blurted out "You have GOT to be kidding me". Alida and her friend Ashley echoed my sentiments precisely.
It was badly done even to Drew, who did not read the book. We were sorely disappointed. :-(
