Ah, yes. The 2010 Nebula Awards run by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
Small conference, but lots of friendly people. I've already met a lot of names I've heard of and never talked to. Shared a room last night with Mary Robinette Kowal, Laura Anne Gilman (Nebula Nominee, WHOO!), Eugie Foster and her husband (who's name I cannot remember. I should be ashamed of myself). And while they're all off to see the launch of Shuttle Atlantis, I'm sitting at the registration desk filling in and waiting for people to get back from lunch so I can have some eats of my own.
I finally got to meet my first editor, Russell Davis, face to face. He's a really sweet guy. Well, my roomies are sweet too, but Russell is a fun guy to talk to. I'm so glad my first publishing experience was with him. I have a lot of respect for this guy (even before we met).
Of course, I'm sitting at registration when he arrives trying to solve printer problems when suddenly I hear "Brandie Tarvin, I want a 10,000 word story from you and I want it yesterday." And there's Russell grinning evilly across the table from me. (I'm paraphrasing and yes, it was actually a joke and not a real job invite. @sigh). But we had a really nice conversation about the trials and tribulations of media tie-in writing for movie prequals.
Yesterday, a guy -- and his 2 kids --, from another convention that's here for the shuttle launch, walked up to our table and started asking questions. Found out we were SFWA and said "Is this something like the Nebulas?" I said "It is the Nebulas" and he did a small double-take, asking me when the Nebulas were happening. When I told him this weekend, he freaked out. "Here? The Nebulas are HERE?" He spent the next 10 minutes in an excited frenzy explaining to his kids what SFWA and the Nebulas were. They were bored and uninterested, but Dad was very very happy. Hee.
So far, my Nebulas experience has been incredibly fun and not at all awkward. Busy, though. My fault, I suppose, for volunteering to help with the conference. Next time, I'll know better. @=)
EDIT: I'm really tired. I spelled Laura Anne's name wrong this morning. It is now corrected.
