a day of wonder...

Feb 11, 2006 07:55

So I woke up fairly early yesterday. Tried in vain to find a taker for my spare Wondercon ticket. Then I left shortly after my last post...

I walked to work, grabbed a few things (my Spider-Man movie soundtracks and some business cards), then continued on my way to the bus stop. I just got there when the bus pulled up, and I got on, sat down, and away we went. I got off at the Millbrae BART station, got on the next train (which was already there and waiting) and made my way to the Powell Street stop in the city. I walked down a few blocks to where the Metreon is, and right across the street was my destination: the Moscone center west. I walked inside, traded my ticket for a badge, and went into the biggest dealer's hall I'd ever seen. I was on overload! There were selling every geeky thing you could think of... I was in heaven... well, except for the fact that I had told myself I was going to be good about not spending so much money.

I walked from booth to booth (including the Lee's one, 317) and after a movie trailer panel to start the day off right I ended up meeting and shaking hands with the following people:
  • Mark A. Altman - Editor of Cinefantastique magazine and co-writer of Free Enterprise
  • Sergio Aragones - writer/artist of Groo the Wanderer and artist on Mad Magazine
  • Peter David - "writer of stuff", on everything from Star Trek to Spider-Man
  • Sarah Douglas - Ursa of Superman 2 and Pamela of V: The Final Battle
  • Gary Lockwood - Poole of 2001 A Space Oddessy and Gary Mitchell of Star Trek
  • Chase Masterson - Leeta of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • Peter Mayhew - Chewbacca from 4 of the Star Wars films
  • Jack O'Halloran - Non of Superman 2
Needless to say I was in serious fanboy mode. Mark Altman was really cool, talked with me a lot, and said he may be persuaded to give me a free copy of the Free Enterprise Special Edition that is coming out on March 7th! I hyperventilated a bit before meeting Peter David, but he was a great guy, talked a bit about writing Q Squared and some other stuff, including recounting his trouble with Richard Arnold. Peter Mayhew's hands are HUGE, and I was happy for just a handshake from the man, as I knew I was meeting a legend.

It turned out that they were giving free passes to a movie screening at the Metreon, and I persuaded
Gwynne to grab
Carland meet me there. The movie, which started an hour after it was supposed to, was worth the wait... seriously, go see "Running Scared" when it comes out in two weeks. The director and star of the movie were there, and the audience applauded a ton for them when it was all over, in addition to clapping at certain scenes during the movie. I was having so much fun I didn't even care that the ladies in back of us were talking every now and then, since they were just talking about the movie anyway. After the movie we were all starved, so the three of us had a late dinner at Lyon's, then we took Carl home and went home ourselves. Damn, what a great day!

Now I am about to leave for a day of working at the con... more to come!
