183 - Tell me a secret
Derek waited until Sarah had left the room and she’d gone far away enough so she wouldn’t see him reach into the bin and pick up the toothbrush. Most people would be revolted at the idea of using something from the trash, but Derek wasn’t most people. He knew the value of things and understood how everything was important and vital, no matter how small or how disgusting it might be.
He couldn’t recall the last time he’d managed to get his hands on anything new, especially a toothbrush. It had been a long time since he’d felt every bristle and tasted that minty freshness that came from brushing your teeth for three minutes or more.
The toothbrush had been used already, by Sarah. It had been her toothbrush therefore it was in a way her property but things like possession of objects was overrated, everybody shared in the future and nobody clung to their possessions like they were the most important things to them anymore. Material things were easy to replace, people were not. It was a shame that it took near annihilation for the human race to figure that one out.
Derek never told Sarah or anyone else for that matter that he’d picked the toothbrush out of the trash and continued to use it. She would work it out for herself when she came back into the bathroom and she saw it back in the holder. He didn’t care, didn’t feel the need to explain, but he would give some form of it if she ever wondered.
They never wasted anything, not where he came from. Everything was used and reused if it needed to be. It was amazing the things you learnt and came to terms with if it meant living one day longer. A toothbrush was just a toothbrush, didn’t matter if it had already been used or thrown away. If it got the job done then what exactly was the problem?
Derek had thrown off all the old ways of thinking, adapting himself to the new world and all its letdowns. After a while it became second habit, a means of survival and he refused to feel ashamed of it.
