The first things Derek Reese notices about this world is of course that it’s still in one piece, humans live above the surface, machines
don’t run everything and there’s a sunrise at the start of every new day.
Nothing like the future.
The second thing is the music, the way in which it fills the sound systems over countless seconds. He’d forgotten just how much of an effect music could have on you as a person, nearly forgotten how many different emotions it can stir and how much it can cut through everything else.
It’s powerful and overwhelming.
The world is alive, not like it is in the future, it’s filled with sounds and people, living their lives and doing all the day to day things that are completely non-existent in the future.
Sometimes when Derek is out he stops to watch and listen, just letting the music and conversations fill his ears, reminding him of what he’s working so hard to save.
Judgement day can’t happen, not when there’s so much at stake.
