moving experience

I hate movers.  If knew last week what I know now, I would have surrendered my deposit to the moving company and just rented a Uhaul trailer.  Argh.

So Beloit has given me a chunk of money to help me move to Wisconsin.  At $2000, it seemed like more than enough to get the job done professionally.  Sure enough, when I called various companies, I got a lot of quotes in the $1500 range, which sounded about right.  They arrived at the quote by weight estimate, but also gave a cubic foot estimate, which I didn't pay all that much attention to.  After all, we were talking about weight.  I went with a company that seemed above-board, though small, and paid a 15% deposit towards my move.  Great.
They showed up on the appointed date - barely.  They were supposed to be there at noon, but actually turned up at 10pm.  The lead mover guy took a good look at my stuff and said that the cubic foot estimate I'd been provided with was significantly smaller than my load.  Also, he explained that I was going to be charged for six flights of stairs, even though I live on the third story of my complex.  (Apparently, five steps equals a flight.  Who knew?)
And so.  We spent the next four hours covering things with packing blankets and loading them onto a truck.  I'm pretty sure that every box I marked "fragile" got dropped down at least one flight of stairs - or two, depending on whose definition you go with.
I pulled six chairs and an end table out of the pile, preferring to move them in the back of my truck rather than add them to the cubic footage estimate; even so, the guy ended up charging me for 550 cubic feet of stuff.  Funny, given that I've stored all of my belongings (including the chairs and the end table) in a 5x10x10 storage unit without a problem.
In the end, they charged me double what I'd been quoted.  I have been trying to get in touch with the sales manager at the moving company for the past three days, but oddly enough, she's not returning my phone calls.  I am angry.
