So I'm reading the paper today, and I see an article with a headline similar to this:
"High-tech museum brings creationism to life"
It has a picture of cavemen living with dinosaurs. I laugh to myself. "There's no way anyone will be dumb enough to believe that dinosaurs live with humans."
Well, judging from the comments I've seen attached to the online versions of these articles, I am horrified to be wrong. There are people who buy that concept, and that God made it that way.
I'll be the first to admit I'm no scholar when it comes to empirical study, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the Bible that says we lived with the dinosaurs. I'm happy that people believe in a Christian God. I'm happy that they embrace the virtues and books of the Bible. I'm not happy when people are so strongly set against science because it differs with the Bible.
"John Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research in San Diego, an organization that promotes creationism, said the museum will affirm the doubts many people have about science, namely the notion that man evolved from lower forms of life.
“Americans just aren’t gullible enough to believe that they came from a fish,” he said."
I guess I'm really gullible then. It makes me concerned when people are so deadset against the theory of evolution even if there is very strong evidence to support its existence. I appreciate the Bible, but with all due faith, I don't take everything it says literally. I can understand, and in some degree, believe in intelligent design and vitalism. But I'll be damned to hell if we lived with dinosaurs a la The Flintstones, and we were just created a few thousand years ago.
But what scares me the most is from an international perspective. For example, the Islamic theocracy that is Iran. We talk about how dangerous their beliefs are, and some will go as far as to demonise Islam and their society. But then you sub-out Islam for Christianity, and we could be just as bad if some religious nut-job ever comes to power. And this is what keeps me uneasy about this country.
