While I may disagree with the President on some issues, such as this, he's far from the evil, gay-basher that some try to make him out to be.
Did you know:
"As president, Bush has appointed several openly gay officials and signed legislation to allow domestic partner benefits in Washington, D.C.
Conservative Christian groups were incensed when Michael Guest, Bush's pick to serve as ambassador to Romania, was allowed to report to Bucharest with his male partner.
The conservative Family Research Council has accused the president of giving "implicit endorsement" to the "homosexual political agenda." Robert Knight, the director of the conservative Culture and Family Institute, said Bush had gone AWOL in the culture war.
"He has not overturned a single Clinton policy that advanced the homosexual agenda, except one: The White House itself did not issue a gay pride proclamation," Knight said."
Well hats off to GWB for not discriminating against politicians strictly on the basis of their sexual orientation, as the Family Research Council would like. GWB would look like an outright, shameless bigot if he were to deny gay Michael Guest his ambassador gig only because he is gay. Hopefully Michael Guest never dreams of lofty plans of wanting to become ambassador to a country with a little more political spotlight. I never said that GWB would categorically exclude a homo to hold a political position because he/she is gay. Again good for GWB for not eliminating the guy from the highly profiled position of Ambassador to Romania.
Domestic partner benefits? Please, there are plenty of straight couples that don't marry that gain from his apparent support of domestic partner benefits. Had GWB enacted DP benefits only to make up for his insistance on prevention of same sex marriages, perhaps he people like the Log Cabin Republicans would still have a little bit of respect for him.

You can read the entire article, which contains insights into GWB's stance on the subject from one of the president's gay friends (yes, he has gay friends, imagine that) at http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/6662025.htm?1c.
