Hi! Wow, so much has happened since my last entry! I still don't have internet (or cable) at home, so I'm posting to you from my mom's house, but as soon as I get my first paycheck that will be addressed. My first two weeks at work have gone great. The first week was all orientation and computer training, which was not always the most interesting, but at least we were getting paid in full for it. This past week we actually started at the hospital, which was cool. My ID badge is all taken care of (and the picture is actually decent!), all the nurses seem really nice, and the new hire coordinators are really doing a good job of easing everyone into their new positions and not freaking anyone out. So far we haven't had our own patients yet, we're just sort of observing the unit, learning how to do the documentation, drawing labs, doing assessments, stuff like that. I also bought myself a bunch of cute little scrubs! Good times. So far, I'm really excited. My preceptor is a nurse that I met when I was precepting on the unit for school, and he's really nice. It's a 50/50 day/night rotation, so we work about three weeks of day shifts, then three weeks of night shifts, etc. Also, everyone has to work one holiday per year- Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's. This year I'm working Thanksgiving, which to me seems like the best of the three, so my mom said we can just have dinner after I get off at 7pm (thank goodness it's not a night shift). I'm actually kind of excited about working nights. I think it'll be weird, but at least the unit will be a little quieter and calmer and I can take some time getting used to things.
My apartment still looks basically the same as it did a few days after I moved in. I'm waiting on that first paycheck to buy some bookshelves and storage containers and stuff so I can put everything away. I'm thinking of buying one of those big steamer trunks from Target like kids take to college with them and using it as a storage unit/coffee table. Gotta utilize the space, right? The only thing I'm worried about right now is getting my safety deposit back from my landlady. The deposit was one month's rent, which was $800, so at first she said she would just rip up my last rent check, but then she realized she had to get the carpets cleaned. So she cashed the check and said she would mail me a check for the difference. However, the last time I heard from her was September 5, when she said she still didn't know how much the cleaning would cost. Her guess was around $200, which would net me $600, which I would really like to have as soon as possible. I signed up for direct deposit at work, but the first check always gets mailed to you before that kicks in, and I don't think it's expected to show up before September 26. Maybe it's time to check in with the landlady again.
Oh, I totally forgot that since my last entry we went to New York! It was really fun. Clint's brother, who goes to Columbia, was nice enough to let us use his Manhattan apartment (!) for the weekend since he was going to be out of town, so Sara, Clint, Rob and I had ourselves a little road trip! We did many fun things, such as go to the Museum of Sex, sample delicious frozen yogurt from Pinkberry, walk across the Brooklyn bridge, and watch "Hamlet II," which was hilarious. We also went to the aquarium at Coney Island, where I also devoured a funnel cake on the boardwalk and effectively fulfilled a childhood fantasy. Yay!
So, as the job starts to pick up, I'll keep you posted on how it's going. I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for my favorite weather- SWEATSHIRT WEATHER!! YAAAAAAAY!!
