"I have recently heard once again that Republicans are pushing for the drilling of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). I urge the congressmen of all states, from both parties, to educate themselves on the facts regarding the drilling of ANWR as stated by the United States Geological Society.
Opening up ANWR is NOT a short term solution. Geologists estimate that in ANWR there is only 7.7 billion barrels of oil (bbo) not all of of which is economically recoverable. The US uses 7.1 bbo annually, so at most ANWR contains a little over one years worth of oil which will not see the US market for another 10 years. It is one of the WORST and least effective solutions that has been repeatedly brought up in every discussion on how to reduce our dependence on foreign oil or lower gas prices. Increasing fuel efficiency in cars, improvements in tire design, and simply encouraging the American people to conserve fuel would by far be more effective if the representatives of this country would have the guts to stand up and request it. The environmental cost of forever ruining this pristine wildlife area and continuing to encourage this country's wasteful use of oil is insurmountable. The fact that our elected officials continue to push drilling ANWR as a reasonable solution in light of the global climate change (which is already noticeably taking place) is complete oil-lobbyist driven irresponsibility.
Poles have shown that the majority of Americans (53%) DO NOT support drilling ANWR. As elected representatives you can not conscionably ignore the will of the American people and the collective good. Please, listen to your constituents and remove drilling ANWR from our national budget."
Sincerely,
