REC: Two Two One Bravo Baker

May 22, 2013 16:18

Like anyone needs a rec for this one - 240k hits on AO3, which is a lot, even for a story of 27 chapters.

Two Two One Bravo Baker Sherlock Holmes and John Watson meet in Afghanistan prior to the events of A Study in Pink. BBC Sherlock fandom.

Lots to love. Great OCs, great setting, looks like a good military beta or good research (there's stuff about that part of the writing in her AO3 that I haven't read), good case, interesting bad guys, good Mycroft.

LOTS of porn. Lots.

Criticisms. She has favorite words that stand out and get repeated. I hate that. Also, not Brit-picked. Even as an American reader, I feel like Sherlock fanfic writers should at least *try.* Sherlock is nowhere *near* obnoxious enough, though I don't mind him being soft-pedaled in this, I don't hear "punch me in the face" every time he speaks. Seems wrong.

Worst thing. The quality of pillowtalk is *weak* and there's a lot of sex, so I would get all nose-wrinkly when I saw another round of sex coming up.

Abundantlyqueer is an interesting writer, because she will just disregard things she doesn't like. She is writing erotic fantasy and knows it and is unapologetic about it. Her characters don't even think about condoms. Her response to questions about this is, this is fantasy, condoms are boring and so are STDs. I think she must have a similar opinion of military atmosphere for homosexual relationships. John has no obvious qualms about being in a hot and heavy relationship with Sherlock, right in front of his whole unit, and really largely in front of God and everybody. In some ways, it's nice to just set that aside and not revist old territory in a slash story, but on the other hand, it's sort of a strain on ye olde suspension of disbelief, like waiting for another shoe to drop that doesn't even seem to exist.
