No, I don't have a little brother. This post is all about a book. Which scared the living daylights out of me, and if I'd started reading it any later, I would not have gotten a wink of sleep tonight. I would have stayed up all night reading it, completely oblivious to the fact that I have unfinished Calculus and Physics homework lying on the floor next to me. This book reminds me of Orwell's 1984. You might think that 17-year-old hackers defeating the Department of Homeland Security in a post-terrorist-attack, police state that was formerly known as San Francisco is hokey and stupid. This is where you are wrong.
I am not familiar with computer programming, cryptography or hacking. I can hardly navigate the blogosphere without help! But this book made everything seem so plausible. I could see the world as we know it unraveling in my mind's eye. Paranoia is a part of our daily lives, the idea that someone is always watching always lurking in the back of our minds. I can't bring myself to download the latest version of iTunes because the Genius feature (it reads your music and sends the data to Apple). I'll probably look back on this entry and marvel at how unstable and paranoid I sound, but Little Brother offers a whole new perspective on life and once the paranoia wears off, I'll be glad I've seen life through that lens.
The book is called Little Brother
The Author is Cory Doctorow
You need to read this book.
I just found out that Jared and Jensen were IN SEATTLE. At a SEAHAWKS GAME. THIS AFTERNOON. *dies*
