So, I've been diddling with the back story on this thing, and I swear, I've written 1700 words on that alone. Insanity. But I haven't written a single word of story yet, because I'm trying to loosen the separate storylines, so that there's no glaring bullshit meters going off when someone points out that this person couldn't know X at the time he did! Balderdash and humdrum, bur br br br.
The difficult thing is piecing the timeline with a reasonable pattern so that when everything happens, it makes sense. I'm writing all this from a first person viewpoint, so what you get told isn't everything YOU need to know, what's enough is that it's what HE knows. And so on.
Also, note to self, learn a lot about the way people lived in 1926. It helps. The temptation to have people whip out a Blackberry is pretty strong. Also, Tong History, value of rubies, cost of various items of that period, and general locations throughout San Francisco, esp. Chinatown and nearby neighborhoods, circa 1920's.
I am in over my head!
