Himawari was eight when she first heard the word 'jinx'.
She didn't really understand what it meant, but it felt bad coming from the gossiping women who would only look at her from the corner of their eyes. So she went to look it up in her children's dictionary. And when she couldn't find it there, she went to look in the big people's dictionary, the much thicker one which sat on the desk in her father's study.
She found it.
And then she looked up the words, 'curse', 'hex', and 'spell' as well.
It took her quite a long while, because there were more big words inside the dictionary that she had to look up as well. But she persevered, and in the word, Himawari got quite a good idea about what the word meant.
When she was done, she carefully closed the book and stared at the cover for a long time.
And then Himawari went outside to play.
