Fragment: Espirit de Corps (Part 1 (1.0-1.5))
Fandom: Nabari no Ou (Pre-canon)
Genre: Possibly drama/friendship pre-shonen-ai stuff if your mileage varies that way, maybe. A bit of angst. (of course.)
Rating: Pseudo-T
Why: No real warnings except for certain bits of Gau's assumptions concerning Raikou's salvatory intents.
Also Gau's "cheapshot" and Raikou being a fantastic troll even when he spaces out.
Oh, and implied blood, murder, and pre-Yoite Yukimi!aggression. (Why doesn't anybody ever find that interesting? Raikou and Yukimi have such a fascinating work relationship... You could ship off it if you wanted to, but it's so rare anyone ever does. Seven years difference, yeah, but this is manga.)
More subtle T-rating, I think, just to be safe. The manga itself is rated OT, so anyone who can't read T-rated stuff should be ashamed from the start.
FIC NOTE: completely speculative events, since this didn't happen anywhere in the manga or anime. If it did, it would be awesome, but I'm neither that lucky or that skilled.
Also, ABSENTMINDED RAIKOU POV ALL OVER THE PLACE. Hence why this is tewenty pages.
Notes on Substance:
(Yeah you thought I was gone... *NINJ4S*)
This was part of a playful chat-induced-sort-of-challenge between myself and my dear friend of going-on-eight-years. (IE: MOG!) It was completed sometime in the early summer as a sort of late 21st birthday present, sent off in an email, and then...lost as my brand new computer crashed spectacularly and entirely a few months later. I only recovered it in an earlier form--forgotten in my "sent" folder--in early December. Naturally I was overjoyed. Losing such good work had been one of the few regrets I had over the lost months spent on my netbook. So, I managed to tweak a few things here and there--like the newly revealed official canon translation of Gau's notebook page in book four, which reveals--among more canon-serious things--that Raikou's hair has been colors other than pink. ("-kou-san enters rooms floored in tatami without removing his shoes. He dyed his hair from green to pink. I think it suits him.")
It's really just pure fun on my part to give Raikou blue hair throughout the events here, so far, because blue fades into green among other things, and the transition of tattoos and hair-dying is...external, and Raikou's character is interesting for the dichotomy of the horribly florid nature of his external expression against his inner violent reticence. (I think it was also Ven-san, or maybe the estimable Leca-sama who implied blue hair on Raikou. In the anime, the picture was washed in blue if nothing else, so it's a fun little idea. I hope whoever started this doesn't mind if it's inadvertently borrowed. Strongbad insists you gotta have blue hair.)
The original half-challenge was something like "create a piece featuring Thirteen-year-old-Gau and Seventeen-year-old Raikou's interactions, including, if possible, a fight in which Raikou uses his longer arms to advantage holding back a wildly swinging Gau."
Accidental recovery left me two early-draft chapters of this, but the first here is capable of standing on its own until I manage to look over and clean what was salvaged off the second which is...grittier in its own way to start with, and a lot less deliberately disfocused. (Gau's POV is very different from Raikou's--particularly since this fic was among those I wrote to work on my Gau-POV for RP-ing, which I've been doing ever since.)
I'm fairly pleased with this part of the work, and hope to continue it to at least three chapters if not more. (Three chapters at least, because that's how far I have mapped out. I hardly intend to document the entirety of Raikou and Gau's relationship up to canon, but I'd like to at least get to the point where Gau comes under him in Wakachi.)
Feedback--positive or otherwise--is always more than appreciated. Be as brutal as you like~
On a side note, disconnected and distracted POV is disconnected and distracted. Raikou always strikes me as at once spacy and layered--superficiality of what he wants to appear to be, over top of what he actually is. That, and nobody ever seems to write RaikouXGau from Raikou's perpective because Gau is so much easier for "normal" people to identify with, as far as I can figure. In attempting Raikou, I accept the possibility that I've read him wrongly, or at the least entirely differently from other people. That's why you're meant to give feedback, thank you. But I still hope he's up to par, or at least interesting. I've put a lot of canon-review behind him, coupled with certain analysis, so I hope at least that the experience is as pleasant for a reader as it was for me to dig though and construct. Raikou's implied character traits are quite interesting in their own way, and I hope I can continue to work through him.
So without further ado...
Chapter one is found in two parts because I'm longwinded~! (YAY LINKS)
DIVISION 1.0DIVISION 1.5 Last side note?
I am a LOT better at HTML now. Thank you, Hometrail
Lots of practice~
And...writing Raikou and Gau interactions is a great excuse for, and greatly helped by eating sushi. With lots of wasabi, of course. I'M SO HAPPY~
