Round Three Pairings

Ok, folks. First, a reminder to make sure to READ THE RULES. PLEASE make sure to follow the required headers. Remember that you can write anything from short goofy gen for kids to long explicit smut for adults and anything in between. You can write a haiku, a drabble, a short story, an epic novel or some gorgeous art. Let your mind run free ( Read more... )

First, this is not meant as anything snippy or negative, so I hope I don't come across as such. :) Just a few things I think maybe a few others might share but haven't mentioned. I know they cause problems for me ( ... )

Are there any real people in the list? I know that Band of Brothers was based on the real men, but most people in the BoB fandom acknowledge that the mini-series wasn't completely accurate, and we think of the men in it as characters.

As for the few pairings where you know both the characters, it's not like you could do something for all the pairings anyway. If you don't think the characters have chemistry, then you could always write something gen.

Well, I did write "combinations of "real people" (book/movie/tv show characters)". :) I didn't mean real as in actors or presidents or anything, I meant "real people" as in book/movie/tv show characters. My problem is with putting these together with drawn characters because they inhabit two completely different universes. As for actual real people, I wouldn't even have a problem with them. I write RPS and enjoy it. :)

But the BoB thing you mentioned is actually a good point. I've never really decided for myself whether I consider BoB fic RPS or FPS. They really are more like characters than actual people, aren't they?

If you don't think the characters have chemistry, then you could always write something gen.Hmm, that is actually a good idea if the lack of chemistry is a problem. However, I'm not really a gen kind of person. I do pairings. I love writing pairings. It's the idea of putting two characters together romantically that makes me love fanfic so much. So, writing gen is... well, not as ( ... )

Ah, my bad, I did read the comment properly :D That I understand. I guess it would be less of a problem for characters that are both real life and drawn, when a comic is turned into a film or TV show, or vice versa.
I guess it just adds to the crackiness :D

I definately consider the BoB men to be characters. I'm reading the book at the moment, and its a lot different in places to the mini-series. I sort of identify that as the real people, and the show as characters.

I have the opposite problem! I would love to be able to write slash, but whenever I try, it ends up coming out as some kind of buddy-fic. Lol!

I'd love to get my hands on the BoB book because I've only seen the series (first two times found it boring for some reason and stopped after one episode, on the third time noticed that it's really great and loved it). I should try and see if they sell it on any of the online bookstores I can get my hands on.

Hey, buddy-fic is good too. :) Sometimes friendship is the best choice. There's nothing worse than a slash fic that's forced and/or written by someone who clearly doesn't do slash naturally. Compared to that option, friendship fic wins hands down. :)

Well, here's my thoughts on this --

1) I look at the list and I can only find maybe 3 pairings I want to write.
a) I only know about 2/3 of the characters people submit. Maybe less.

2) Some people like the overly cracky between-genre pairings, some don't. That's why I put up the poll. I think, cautiously, people are interested in more limited rounds. I think we'll try alternating "regular" rounds with rounds like "only tv characters" or "only movie characters" and the like.
a) that said, if you want to increase the likelihood of two characters you know getting paired up, HELP GET MORE PEOPLE TO SUBMIT CHARACTERS! I can't emphasise this enough. The more people who submit characters, the more variety we can get.

3) What partofthequeue2 said about gen. Don't think about it so much about relationships, necessarily. I dunno what your fandoms are, but I look at the list and think things like, "Father Mulcahy is the chaplain on Atlantis. How does he deal with the crap?" or "Weevil from Veronica Mars is a passenger on Serenity, and Simon ( ... )

You still got me beat. :) I counted how many of these characters I'd dare to take a stab at (compared to the list of characters I know -- some are really difficult to write, some I've only seen once or twice, some I only know via friends but have no idea what they even look like) and the result is 31 characters. Ack. And they're all paired up with people I don't even know or who scare me. The number of characters I know -- I use the word loosely -- is maybe around 1/4 or 1/3 at most. Suddenly I feel like such a fandom n00b.

I think we'll try alternating "regular" rounds with rounds like "only tv characters" or "only movie characters" and the like.
I would love that so much. Yay!

HELP GET MORE PEOPLE TO SUBMIT CHARACTERS! I can't emphasise this enough.:) Ah, yes. I will do my best to help with that one. And I admit that I don't really have any reason to complain (I don't really mean to complain, though, just raise a few points I've been thinking) when I didn't ( ... )

Heh, it's strange how (2) never even occurred to me. *g* As long as the time period/location/circumstances are either fitting or can be tweaked in a canonly reasonable way, they're all just as "real" (or fictional ;) ) for me.

Of course, I'm lazy with the actual writing, and content myself with thinking "aha, well, X could travel to A where Y is being stationed" or "Z time-travels to W's era and sets his eyes on him in a tavern" or... you know. (Yet another reason to adore fandoms where time travelling and/or immortality is/are canon. :D )

Well, it just shows how much of a wilder imagination you have than me. :D And how much more creative your mind is. You can consider the cartoon characters (or what have you) as real people, while I really can't ( ... )
