Tonight my dad's aunt and first cousin came over to celebrate Hanukkah with our family. Aunt Millie (my GREAT aunt) has had back and breathing problems for a while now. At the dinner table she talked about how living in a nursing home is a completely morbid experience. Everyday she sees ambulances rush past her window to take another one of her fellow residents to the ER or morgue. In her circle of friends, they often talk about who died that week or try to one-up each other on their own health problems. I just sat there thinking, my god! In college, all my friends and I talk about are school, new movies, video games, "current events", etc. We are fortunately all healthy and don't have to worry about feeling searing pain every time we walk or occasionally gasping for air when we breathe. Yet the scary thing is, these two groups are only separated by about 40 or 50 years. Tonight just made me realize how f*ing lucky I am to be healthy and youthful. Not that I am afraid of getting old, but hearing my great aunt talk, makes me want to get the most out of life while I still can! Hope everyone is having/had a wonderful vacation!
