This past wednesday's comics made me a happy fangirl!!
Fluffy bromance in its purest makes Mari happy
First of all, I can confirm that, after stupid and pointless minis like Gotham Underground and Battle for the Cowl (really, why they still have Tony Daniels in staff is a mistery to me), perhaps Batman reborn was not that bad an idea. I'm beginign to be really comfortable with most of the changes. It's funny to read about a chatty, cheerful Batman with a grumpy Pshyco-Robin. They have put some really good writers to work on it, with some really good artist (for most titles, at least). Some changes are a bit on the WTF side, though, and others feel forced even if the result is quite ok, but all in all, something good might come out of this mess.
This said, let's review!!
BATMAN 691
Interesting. Harvey Dent and Dick Grayson go a long way back, so it's fitting that Two-face is the first villian to spot the changes on the Dark Knight. Alfred rocks so much I really don't know why they don't simply give the man the cowl and save Gotham.
BATGIRL 3
They are trying to give Stephanie Brown a meaning and, luckily, some evolution. I mean, I don't dislike the cahracter, but I'm a bit fed off of the whole "you have the heart but not the skills and you'll get us all killed eventually" thing going on with her forever. The only bad thing is we don't know where Cassandra Cain/Wayne is.
It would be fun if she finally showed up in Red Robin.
BATMAN: BLACKEST NIGHT 3
Zombieeeees!!
So, you have some heroes whose main background point is that they are orphans and you have some power rings that turn people into zombies. What would you do? Of course, make the boys face their murdered fathers and their already dead assassins. Oh, and make them torch them down with a flamethrower. That's always a plus :P
Also, I'm having great time with the whole "Robin" "What?" "No, The other Robin" thing. It happens a lot in a single book and it amuses me. You can feel Batman's streets.
BATMAN AND ROBIN 5
Ok, I like Damian Wayne. I still feel I should be ashamed to say it, but... sigh.
On the other side... WTF?? Since when post crisis Jason Todd was dying his hair?? I'm feeling a bit tired of the whole "we don't agree about Todd so every writer makes up a new feature". That said, I'm curious, but it's the less exciting of all the current Bat-titles.
BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM
It feels like Gotham Knights. Little stories that focus more on character and less on action. Good title with one of the best artist currently working for Dc comics:
Dustin Nguyen.
I love it.
RED ROBIN 5
My only complaint about this book is the art.
Ramón Bachs is not a bad artist, but the ink is awful. Why can't we have the artist from the covers to do the entire book??? Still, Timmy still rocks and the rest of the characters are funny. I'm glad they picked Chris Yost for this title. He knows his stuff.
And finally, the title that made my fangirlself squee and my inner slasher glee.
ADVENTURE COMICS 3
Conner and Tim meet again for the first time since the former died. Cloning dead friends is discused and we even get a mention about the fugly new costume. Not to forget that finally someone tells RR what he needed to hear. The issue is full of fluf and all sorts of awesome.
Also,
Francis Manapul draws the entire issue!! His pencils are incredible. We've had to wait a lot for the copyright things to be settled for Superboy to be back, but it's been worth.
And I think that's all. Now to wait for next month to see if the exciment lasts.
