CLOCK’S A’TICKIN’
Wonder Woman was pleased. The Clock Tower in Gotham City was a fine sanctuary for the meetings she had planned with these women. A portable thermaheater kept things warm, and Lois had brought snacks and cold drinks. A couch and chairs grouped around a coffee table offered a cozy setting.
“I can’t believe the city doesn’t use this place,” said Lois, sipping a Jovaran Sparkle.
“Maintenance checks it out occasionally, so we’d better remember to put the slipcovers back on the furniture,” said Catwoman, curled up on one end of the couch as she sipped Rigellian Raspberry Root Beer.
“It’s a beautiful old place,” said Black Canary, looking around at the solid Victorian wood and sparkling stained-glass windows. The fireplace had a mahogany mantel, and the gilt edge of the mirror hanging over it was tarnished but still resplendent with swirls and curlicues.
Batwoman sat at the other end of the couch, Lois and the Canary in overstuffed chairs. The Bat’s black cape was draped over the back of the couch, displaying hints of a red lining.
Wonder Woman sat in the middle of the couch, the unspoken leader of the group. She drank deliciously-tart Pineapple Passion, delighted at all the variety of flavors available in Man’s World.
“Sisters, I wish to step up my Abolitionist pronouncements, and am interested to know if you feel the same way.”
Lois took out her datapad. “I’m working on an Abolitionist-themed novel right now which may never see publication, though I can always start posting chapters on my website until the Govs shut me down.”
Batwoman crossed her legs. “You should ask the N.A.S. if they would publish it on their site.”
“Good idea. I can have it finished by Thanksgiving and it’ll be ready for public viewing.”
Catwoman looked as if she would be swishing her tail if she had one. “I would say get the big boys more involved.”
“Big boys?” asked Wonder Woman.
Catwoman nodded. “Men like Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen would bring attention to the issue.”
“They already do,” said Black Canary, crossing her arms.
“They need to step it up.”
The Canary frowned. “They already support the Cause with money and public declarations.”
“They can continue that, and speak out against the abomination of the atrocities the Government itself brings down on escaped slaves who are captured.”
“I can’t argue with that,” said Canary, “But Oliver Queen and Bruce Wayne have already done quite a bit.” She sat back in her chair. “Why not get Lex Luthor to speak out?”
Catwoman waved her hand. “He’s a member of the Kryptonian Control Committee. I doubt that he’s an Abo at heart.”
“He might be.”
“You’re welcome to try.”
“Sisters, both of you have valid points.” Wonder Woman smiled at both women. “We should approach Oliver Queen and Bruce Wayne for further involvement and perhaps see if Lex Luthor will join them.”
“I can do that," said Lois. “I know all three of them.”
“Do you now?” asked Batwoman with a smile. Her red lips made her smile sensuous.
“Yep, I do! I’ve interviewed all of them. Not bad for rich-as-sin guys.”
Wonder Woman laughed. “A good way to describe them, though I would have said ‘rich as Croesus’.”
“Good one, Princess.”
”Are you really a Princess?” asked Batwoman.
“Yes.”
“Cool.”
The women laughed, then Wonder Woman asked, “And whom should I contact at the N.A.S.? The Boston chapter is quite helpful, but I wish to expand my contacts.”
“Kathy Kane is the chapter here in Gotham. Martha Kent is an excellent contact. She’s head of the Topeka chapter,” Lois said.
“Ah, yes. I have heard of the two of them.”
“You’ll get a lot done with them.”
“Excellent.” Wonder Woman ate a lemon cookie. “I see signs of change.”
“You do? Where?” Catwoman’s tone was genuinely curious.
“Amongst the populace.” The Amazon relaxed against the couch. “I have been reading the message boards, listening to conversations…some people are questioning.”
“Some people always question.” Catwoman shrugged.
“Ah, but the fact that they are questioning shows that there is interest out there despite Government oppression.”
“That’s interesting, Wonder Woman.” Black Canary sipped her drink. “I hope you’re right.”
“I believe I am.”
The other women laughed. “You don’t have a lack of confidence, Princess. I like that,” said Catwoman as she unfolded her legs.
Wonder Woman smiled. “I have found confidence to work wonders.”
The other women snickered. “Goodness, Princess, you’re a sly one,” Catwoman approved.
Wonder Woman smiled with a touch of smugness. “Thank you, Catwoman.” She finished her drink. “I shall contact these worthy women. When shall we meet again, Sisters?”
“Next week at this same time and day?” suggested Canary.
Wonder Woman nodded. “It shall be done.”
The group dispersed after finishing their refreshments and Wonder Woman took to the air, the cold clearing her head.
She felt confident that events were moving along. The women she was meeting with were worthy allies.
As she headed out over the sea toward Boston, she glanced back and saw the spires of Wayne Manor.
A castle fit for a Prince.
She headed north, pleased that the Day of Jubilee had just gotten a little closer.
