MAGIC, WILD
When magic is afoot,
Nature has gone wild,
And the earth trembles
As the skies open
And magic rules the land.

1461 C.E.
One morning the three of them woke up to brilliant sunshine and snow melting on the ground. After breakfast Dick ran outside to enjoy the fresh air while Clark and Bruce cleaned up. While at the sink, Clark leaned over and kissed his Prince.
“So I’m Prince Charming now?” Bruce asked wryly.
“Oh, you are utterly charming,” Clark assured him. “And better than a frog.”
Bruce snorted and almost dropped the plate he was washing when a scream startled him.
“Dick!” Clark exclaimed. He and Bruce abandoned their task and rushed out of the cottage.
They were horrified to see a cloaked figure bending over a fallen Dick, who was writhing on the ground. Clark started to rush forward but Bruce grabbed his arm.
“Bruce, we have to…!”
“We need protection.” Bruce reached into his pocket and brought out a yellow jewel that glowed brightly. He lifted his hand and a beam of energy lanced out to slice into the hooded figure. The attacker staggered back and Dick rolled away, scrambling up to run toward Bruce and Clark.
The attacker pointed a bony finger and a bolt of energy flashed out. Bruce barely parried the beam with one of his own.
“To the barn!” Bruce hissed.
Clark nodded and Dick ran with him. Bruce continued his fight with the mage, glad that Clark and Dick were following his plan. It was good to have a plan.
Except when it might not work.
Bruce ducked and dove behind a tree, another bolt of energy singing his sleeve. He could hear the underbrush rustle and feared that reinforcements were on the way. He hoped that the goodies from Zatanna’s bag of tricks would be able to fend off Lionel’s minions.
The sound of hoofbeats was welcome as Midnight and Sunshine galloped his way. He swung up on Midnight’s back behind Clark as Dick urged Sunshine to take the lead.
They raced through the forest, eluding grasping branches and screaming crows as the trees trembled and the ground shook. Up ahead two enormous hands parted the trees and the emerging giant roared.
Dick immediately turned Sunshine away and headed off to the west, Clark urging Midnight to follow. They dared not go deeper into the forest because what was once a haven was now a horror.
The horses knew it, too, and sped as fast as they could go to escape the grasping hand of the giant. A screeching crow dived at Dick, who fended him off with a smoke ball from his bag of tricks. Bruce grabbed one of his own from the saddlebag while Clark expertly guided Midnight.
They burst out from the forest and the horses pounded onto the main road, Bruce taking out another magical ball and throwing it at the giant. It exploded and black smoke wreathed the giant’s head. It roared and tried to bat away the smoke.
“To the Castle!” Bruce ordered.

Lex knew that something was afoot. All winter he had worried and waited, knowing that Bruce was protecting his Clark. They had disappeared after his father’s attack in the fall but Lex trusted Bruce.
Lionel had shut himself up with mages and Witches all winter as he tried to find his prey by magical means. Zatanna had appeared today on Lex’s doorstep and now she had her crystal ball out. As she performed her scrying, Lex remained silent but his heart raced with anticipation.
Zatanan was wearing dark-blue robes patterned with gold stars and silver crescents. Her long black hair flowed over her shoulders and she wore a jaunty little hat, diamond solitaires dangling from her ears. She passed a hand over the ball.
“Your father has sent allies to the Black Forest.”
“Was he successful?” Lex’s right hand gripped his chair arm tightly.
“No.”
Relieved, he asked, “Are they all right?”
She looked up at him. “They are coming here.”
Lex stood. “We must go to meet them.”
Zatanna smiled grimly. “So will your father.”

All chaos broke loose as the long-missing fugitives arrived in the royal courtyard on the backs of Midnight and Sunshine. A horde of screeching birds darkened the sky as a furious giant strode down the rode, met by catapulted boulders that sent him staggering.
Zatanna let loose with spells as the soldiers guarding the Castle used crossbows on the birds. They dodged the screeching avians and took some down but the flock was too numerous.
One bird dived for Dick’s head and he barely dodged it before its sharp talons clawed his eyes out. Zatanna chanted an incantation as the birds were thrown back and disappeared. The giant followed and silence fell over the courtyard.
“Father!” Lex bellowed. He marched over to Clark and kissed him thoroughly, Clark retuning the kiss. Bruce’s heart broke and Dick slipped his hand in his and squeezed.
Lionel stalked confidently into the courtyard. His leonine head looked regal as he exuded confidence, his gaze raking over Clark.
“Welcome back, Clark. You are exactly where I want you to be.”
Bruce swore under his breath as Lex experienced a sinking feeling. He knew his father and his wily ways and trusted him not a wit. He knew that something was about to happen as the wind kicked up and the air grew cold.
“Come now, gentlemen. We all know that I always get my way.”
”Not this time, Father.”
Lionel smirked at his son. “You are mistaken, Lex.”
Lionel spoke an incantation, his arms thrusting upwards. His time studying the Dark Arts would not be wasted.
Except that Lex had allies. Zatanna countered his spell and lightning flashed in dark clouds as the earth trembled. Rain began to lash down as the storm boiled up, everyone taking cover. Zatanna’s long robes whipped around her and her hair streamed out, her arms raised.
Lex joined Clark, Bruce, and Dick in the shadows of the tower. Bruce draped his cape around Dick, drawing the boy close.
It was a magnificent battle of wind and thunder and rain, incantations snatched away by the wind. An explosion of light crackled between the magic-wielders, illuminating the entire courtyard.
Energy crackled and Lionel staggered back. “Nooo!!!” He disappeared in a flash of light, the storm gradually dissolving to leave sunny skies as the rays broke through the clouds.
Everyone came out and congratulated Zatanna. Lex put a hand on her shoulder. “I declare thee the High Mage of Metorpolis.” A cheer went up and Zatanna smiled.
Bruce squeezed Clark’s hand, his heart breaking as Lex came forward and took Clark out to the center of the courtyard and declared him his Consort with the wedding to take place immediately.

Bruce finished packing, glancing out at the gardens. Clark and Lex were holding hands while deep in conversation.
Dick came into the room and saw the duo in the gardens. He looked at Bruce. “Bruce…”
The Prince buckled his saddlebag. “Time for us to go home, Dick.”
Dick nodded sadly. He took out his bag and started packing.
A few minutes later Clark appeared in the doorway. “Bruce.”
“It’s time to get back to Gotham,” Bruce said stiffly. He kept his eyes on his bag. “We have been away too long.” He pulled the bag’s strap and started to lift it over his shoulder as he finally looked up.
Clark smiled fondly and held out his hand. “Come out to the gardens with me.”
“We must get back to Gotham.”
“Gotham can wait.” At Bruce’s frown, Clark said, “Please, Bruce.”
Bruce suppressed a sigh and slid the saddlebag off his shoulder. “Keep packing,” he told Dick, and left with Clark.
Dick finished his packing and looked out the window to the gardens below. He saw Clark escort Bruce toward Lex. They talked and gestured, Bruce appearing to argue, but Clark and Lex were persuasive.
Dick smiled when he saw all three embrace and ran down to join them happily ever after.
