The usual routine prevailed: a quick write-up of the night’s activities, a hot shower, and then upstairs to the kitchen where milk and cookies awaited them. Bruce settled down into the chair and indulged his fondness for Alfred’s chocolate chip cookies. Dick was already on his second cookie, his appetite ravenous.
“Good patrol tonight,” Bruce commented.
“Excellent.” Dick’s grin was infectious. “Apparently sleeping with Superman has more than the usual perks.”
“How so?”
Dick related his conversation with the robber in the third gang. Bruce was bemused but he ate his cookie and let his thoughts run.
“Bruce?”
“Hmm?”
Dick cocked his head. “Clark’s worth all this, right?”
Bruce looked at his ward. “He certainly is.” The blinding smile was a reward that always pleased Bruce.
Dick happily ate more cookies and Bruce grinned slyly. “How’s Roy?”
Dick began to cough and hastily drank some milk. “Fine.”
“You’ll be seeing him this weekend in New York?”
“Yeah, we’re going to be hanging out at the Titans’ Tower for awhile.”
“Good.”
Dick’s leg swung back and forth as he picked up another cookie, his cheek resting on his hand. “And I suppose you and Clark are going to enjoy a nice, long weekend here?”
“We might.”
Dick’s eyes sparkled.
They ate the rest of their cookies in companionable silence, then Dick yawned and Bruce rose, taking their plates and putting them in the dishwasher. Dick brought their glasses over and then the two of them went upstairs, parting with “Good night” in the hallway.
Bruce brushed his teeth and fished out a pair of light-blue pajama bottoms. He put them on and stretched, letting his thoughts wander to the patrol.
It had been a more successful patrol than he had expected. He hadn’t said as much to Dick, but his partner knew that he had been worried about losing the fear that kept his iron control over the underworld. One could not rule with fear if one became an object of ridicule.
However, now it seemed as if sleeping with the most powerful man on Earth could be a boon to his image! Those who dwelled in the criminal circles respected power, and if he gave the impression of being the ‘top’ in the relationship with Superman…
And Clark wouldn’t lose his ability to command respect. He was Superman. ‘Nuff said.
The criminal grapevine had worked: after their first encounter with the denizens of the underworld, the word had spread about Dick’s comment and the concept behind it. By their third encounter, the fear and respect were back.
Very pleased with the night’s success, Bruce turned down the sheets and was ready to climb into bed when he heard a noise. Turning, he saw the unearthly figure hovering outside his window. Heart pounding with excitement, he hurried over and opened the window. He was about to speak Clark’s name when he saw his face.
As Clark floated in, his boots touching the carpet, Bruce knew that this night had not been as successful for his friend and lover.
He carefully slipped his arms around his gentle lover, Clark resting his head on Bruce’s shoulder.
