Bubble, bubble,
Toil and trouble,
There is a notion
That a love potion
Can break up
Even a
Destined Love.
Foolish mortals.

"Song Of Aphrodite"
610 B.C.E.
The woman strode over the rocky hillside, her face obscured by her cloak’s hood. She was sure-footed as she clambered up the incline, the dark-blue folds of her cloak blowing out behind her as the wind whipped off the sea. She approached the cave and waited at the entrance.
“Enter.”
The visitor obeyed, going deep into the cave. A cauldron bubbled as another cloaked figure stirred a golden-pink concoction. The ‘cook’ pulled her hood back, revealing a face to rival the beauty of the Goddesses themselves.
“It is ready.”
The visitor held out a vial with a crystal stopper. The blond poured some of the concoction into the flask.
“Aphrodite’s Aphrodisiac will do what you wish.”
“The Princess must have a worthy mate.”
“I thought she had one now.”
“Not the one she should have.”
“Pour this aphrodisiac in her drink and that of her intended mate, and she will be with the one you deem worthy.”
The visitor nodded. “Thank you.”
“Be very sure. It is not wise to interfere with the Destined.”
“I will take that chance."
The blond nodded at her visitor, who departed.
At the bottom of the hill, the visitor pulled her hood back while looking at the vial.
Artemis smiled.

“Beloved, I will be meeting with some of the JLA for lunch.”
“All right, Angel.” Steve gave Diana a kiss, sliding an arm around her waist as Diana wrapped a leg around Steve’s.
“You keep this up, and we’ll never get out of bed, my love.”
Diana’s eyes sparkled. “And this is a bad thing?”
Steve laughed, tilting his head back as Diana admired the view. She brushed golden locks of hair back from brilliant blue eyes. She leaned down and kissed the warm pulse in his throat.
“Mmm, you’re a very pretty vampire.”
Diana laughed, lightly biting Steve’s neck. He squirmed beneath her as she rolled on top of him.

“Hello, Diana.”
“Hello, Dinah. Good to see you, Zatanna, Shayera.”
The women took seats at the corner table in the Colonial-style restaurant. The Sussex Inn was filled with dark, sturdy beams and copper wall sconces as the wallpaper was mustard-and-white, little symbols of Colonial settlers patterned around the room. Wine-red drapes framed the windows, and a fire crackled in the huge stone hearth.
“A fine atmosphere,” Diana approved.
“A nice change-of-pace from the Watchtower cafeteria,” observed Zatanna.
“Very much,” agreed Shayera.
“So, Dinah, did Ollie survive Lian’s birthday party?”* asked Zatanna with a smirk.
Dinah laughed. “Barely! He and Hal assured me that they had everything under control.” Her eyes sparkled. “Until the girls started bouncing around on sugar highs.”
The women laughed, picturing the chaotic sight.
The conversation turned to League business, coded so that other diners who might overhear could not figure out their other identities. Diana adjusted her glasses as the auburn-haired waitress poured their tea. Once finished, the waitress returned to the kitchen, glancing back with a satisfied smile on her face.
Diana drank her tea. It tasted a little off, but different tea-makers used different methods, sometimes giving the beverage a shading of flavor.
The women enjoyed bantering conversation, their food arriving fifteen minutes later. Diana savored her chicken salad sandwich on wheat bread, tiny bits of celery adding a sharp tang.
“Are you all right, Dinah?” she asked.
Dinah blinked as she looked at her friend. Her cheeks were flushed as she fanned her hand in front of her face.
“I…feel a little hot.”
“Are you coming down with something?” asked Zatanna worriedly.
“No, I think I’m just a little tired.” Dinah gazed at Diana. “Your hair looks beautiful in the light.”
“Thank you, my friend.”
Dinah took another sip of tea. “This mint tea is really…stimulating.”
“Mmm.” Diana took another sip. “A bit unusual.”
“But good.” Dinah’s eyes seemed to sparkle. She patted Diana’s hand, wrapping her fingers around it.
Diana smiled back. Dinah looked especially lovely today.
She took a bite of cranberry relish, appreciating the tart taste. She liked a bit of tartness with her sweetness.
Diana felt warm as the lunch went on. Perhaps it was the fireplace’s heat, but she felt a little light-headed.
Dinah was an attractive brunette or blond. She was not wearing her Black Canary wig, of course, but either color served her well.
She was a fellow Warrior, a martial arts expert with Amazonian skill.
She was curved as a beautiful woman should be, unlike the Man’s World ideal of bony, stick-figure women. She did not consider that a good look for women, much less men.
A pity she cannot wear her fishnets here. It would be a fine sight to see her and Zatanna in those stockings. Diana sipped her tea. Why Man’s World considers fishnets for either harlotry or magician’s wear only is beyond me. More women should wear them. Men, too. She giggled. Dick could pull off wearing them, without question.
“What are you laughing at?” Shayera asked in amusement.
“Oh, just thinking of those who can model certain styles.”
Dinah smiled at her. A beautiful smile, an alluring smile, a bewitching smile…her cellphone rang.
“Yes?”
“Hi, Angel.”
Diana blinked. Her mind felt molasses-slow, Dinah’s smile still filling her field of vision.
“Um, oh, hello, Steve.”
“Are you okay?”
“I am fine.”
“You sound a little off.”
“I am fine.”
“Well, just calling to see if you’re available tonight for dinner.”
“Dinner?”
“Yeah, a nice, cozy evening at home, sending out for pizza.”
Diana blinked, remembering all the evenings spent at home with Steve, enjoying one of her favorite meals, sitting in front of a roaring fire, Steve’s arm around her.
“Would you prefer to go out, Angel? I know we were out at La Maison last night, but if you’d rather…”
Warmth spread through Diana. “No, my love, I want to stay in tonight with you.”
“Great! Okay, see you tonight.”
“Yes.”
“Love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Diana put her cellphone away.
“Sounds like someone has a date tonight,” said Zatanna teasingly.
“Yes,” Diana said with satisfaction.
Dinah looked forlorn and ordered a glass of wine.

Artemis stalked into the cave. “The aphrodisiac did not work!”
The blond acolyte stirred the bubbling liquid in her cauldron. “It did work.”
“It…”
“It simply was not strong enough to overcome a Destined Love.”
“Destined!” Artemis sneered.
The acolyte looked at the Amazon. “Quite so.” She resumed stirring. “Aphrodite’s Aphrodisiac is powerful, but if Diana’s heart is truly elsewhere, not even the Goddess of Love can change that.”
Artemis rolled her eyes. “It is disgraceful that a Princess of the Amazons should be in love with a man!”
The acolyte shrugged. “Love is capricious, but Destined Love will always win out.”
Artemis ground her teeth and turned on her heel, leaving the cave.
Aphrodite’s Acolyte serenely returned to making another batch of aphrodisiac.
