PREPARE THE WAY

Wonder Woman leaped down in front of the gunmen, bullets flying off her bracelets. She laughed as she parried each bullet, the bank robbers swearing. They emptied their clips and she smiled again, leaping forward and disarming them, tying them up with her Golden Lasso.

The Boston police arrived. “Thanks, Wonder Woman!”

She smiled. She was always happy to help out. It created a good foundation for the future when she would be ready to spread her message.

“Wonder Woman! Wonder Woman! How about an interview?”

Boston Lantern reporter Jan Star ran up to the Amazon, datapad in hand.

“Hello, Ms. Star.”

Jan flashed a smile. “I’d like to run another article on you.”

“The first one was not enough?”

“Hardly! You stunned the world by claiming to be an Amazon. They’re supposed to be mythical.”

“I am proof that they are not."

Jan grinned. She brushed back a lock of blond hair, her blue skirt blowing in a gust of strong wind. “You never told me if there were other Amazons.”

Wonder Woman smiled. “I am the representative of the Amazon Nation.”

“So there are more of you?”

Wonder Woman merely smiled again.

“Will you tell me about your bracelets? People say they are slave bracelets.”

Wonder Woman held up her arm, her iron bracelet starkly presented. “This bracelet represents Amazonian strength. It is your world that makes it a symbol of slavery.”

Jan noticed the hard edge in the Amazon’s voice. “Are you against slavery?”

“I am for freedom.” Wonder Woman crossed her arms. “This country was born with a lust for freedom, and yet still allows the shackles of slavery to clank along, holding it back.”

“We are at peace and enjoy unparalleled prosperity.”

“But at what price? Your very soul?” Wonder Woman leaned forward. “Love is the answer, my sister. Love and justice, as Aphrodite and Athena have decreed.”

“The ancient Greek Goddesses?”

“Yes.”

Jan was already writing her story in her head. Pulitzer, here I come! “Do you believe we should worship the ancient Gods?”

“Not unless you want to. They can be rather capricious.”

Jan blinked. “So, why are you here in America? To offer us something new?”

“To offer you the chance to find yourselves again.”

Diana sighed. She was tired after a long day of crimefighting and dealing with the press, though admittedly, Jan Star was not difficult. Still, she had to be careful. She had to get her message out, prepare the people for the eventual Day Of Jubilee, but she could not do that by creating hostile opposition right away.

She entered the modest house she shared with Steve and Hal, quiet so as not to disturb her lovers.

She had entered under cover of darkness, but had taken the further precaution of changing out of costume before entering the neighborhood. She needed a peaceful sanctuary, and that could only be maintained if she kept a secret identity as this country’s other heroes did.

Diana took a drink of water, wondering if she had been too quick to present her message. Perhaps she should have waited, built up to it…

She put the glass down.

No, she remembered her own slavery. Easy to wait when one was free instead of enslaved.

Patience was for the free, not for those who suffered.

She went to the bathroom, prepared herself for bed, and quietly opened the bedroom door.

Steve and Hal were curled up in one half of the bed, endearingly sweet. There was room enough for her to slip in, and she did so without disturbing her men.

She fell asleep with a smile on her face.
