Fic/Art Halloween Challenge Master List I also chose to sift through a bunch of E! fics and had a lot of fun doing so. If you’d like some spooky, scary, spine-chilling fun, check these recs out:
Ghoul Me Once by The Twits. Fun, spooky story of weirdness at Station 51.
Excerpt:
Chet lagged behind. He had a bad feeling about the substitute captain. Something about that voice. . . When he joined the others in the apparatus bay and saw the temporary supervisor, the stocky fireman froze. It’s HIM.
As the men lined up for roll call, they eyed the man in front of them. None knew much about Captain Billy Baker, but rumors were that he was a bit eccentric. He’d only recently transferred into the county from a station up North near San Francisco.
The Haunting Of Station 51 by P..J. Bedingfield. More weirdness at Station 51, but a little spookier and haunting.
Excerpt:
He walked into the bay and looked around. The small yellow ball Henry had been playing with rolled to a stop at his feet. He bent down and picked it up. He bounced the ball and thought about the ghostly haunt at the station. It was now Halloween, October 31st.
Lost In A Dead Zone by Jane Woods. A Twilight Zone-style story! Roy and Johnny are lost in an area that shorts out their squad and communications. A bonus scene illustrates different perspectives on the same historical event as Roy realizes his POV might not always be shared by everyone else. I liked that little sociological commentary there. :)
Excerpt:
"Let's face it, Roy, we're completely and totally lost," Johnny sighed with disgust.
Before Roy could retaliate, he had another problem. The squad was slowing down of its own accord.
Midnight At The Carleton by Jane Woods. Another story that uses Twilight Zone-style spookiness as the men of Station 51 are called to a decaying old hotel.
Excerpt:
Even going full out with lights and sirens blaring it took 16 minutes to reach the address they were given. Their adrenalin was really pumping as they jumped from their vehicles and yanked the equipment they were sure to need from the bays of the squad. The Carlton Arms Hotel had certainly seen its better days. It, like the city around it, was now rundown. While traces of its former art deco glory could still be seen, all and all it looked like a derelict building. This did not stop the men from Station 51 from charging full tilt through the front door.
Brown Bagging It by E!lf. An eerie tale about a haunted…paper bag! *manical laugh*
Excerpt:
Chet scowled at them, but resumed his seat. His shiftmates quickly lost themselves in the movie, but Chet couldn't stop looking over his shoulder, staring at the bag sitting alone in the middle of the table. Two or three times he was sure he heard a soft rustling and once he thought, though he couldn't be certain, that he saw it move. Finally, unable to stand it any more, he jumped up, went in and picked up the bag, folded it and stuffed it into a drawer.
Mike Stoker’s Dracula by Jane Woods. The descendant of Bram Stoker sets out to protect his crewmates from vampires on Halloween.
Excerpt:
They all went back to bed and five of them went back to sleep. Mike listened until he could tell they were all asleep, then he got up. He didn’t make a sound as he left the dorm and padded into the apparatus bay carrying his turnout pants. When he was in the bay he slipped into his pants, and walked up to the engine. He yanked an inch and a half from the hose bed and pulled about eight feet of hose onto the floor. He went around and charged the line. He opened the rear bay door and stood by the back of the engine with the nozzle of the hose just out of sight. Then he waited. He knew she’d come. She had to. Johnny was the only one who had spoken to her and allowed her to get within arm’s reach. As good as an invitation and that’s all it took. Initial contact.
Restless We Wait (2 Chapters) by Peggy J. Bedingfield. The men of Station 51 unwittingly stir up trouble with the Forces of Darkness.
Chapter One Chapter Two Excerpt:
Mike saw the creature and froze in place. He saw the darkness that was swirling and boiling. It had the vague shape of a cat, but he could hear the low pitched hiss and growls that sounded like voices just barely being whispered. He felt his skin crawl and the hair on the back of his neck raise. A low, almost voice, called to him. Mike stepped back once, twice, then turned and fled to the lighted area where his crewmates were standing.
Fantasy Or Reality? by Audrey W. What’s creepier than a creepy doll story? ;)
Excerpt:
The smoke had grown thicker in the short time Gage was outside. As he tried to see inside the living room, he couldn’t find any sign of Roy. Figuring his partner was still searching through other areas downstairs, he once again headed for the steps. He hurried past Chet and Marco while the two hosed down some major flames inside the room.
Once he got past them and closer to the stairs, a movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention.
The dolls. . .?
Who’s There? by Audrey W. The equally creepy doll story sequel! :)
Excerpt:
The door to Sarah’s bedroom slowly opened, the moonlight pattern shifting with the motion. The little girl’s heart raced faster and she quickly pulled the covers up over her head. Even though she’d been waiting for the arrival, it still scared the daylights out of her.
