Title: Crystal Rain Book I: Whatever Happened To Melvin Purvis? (19/19)
Author: BradyGirl_12
Pairings/Characters (this chapter): Teddy/Chuck, Trey Washington, Mel/Johnny, Ellie Marino
Series Notes: My notes grew too voluminous for the header, so you can find them in a separate entry here.
Fandoms: Public Enemies/Shutter Island
Genres: Angst, AU, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery
Rating (this chapter): PG-13
Warnings (this chapter): None
Spoilers: For Shutter Island, some scenes were tailored by me to fit this story. Nothing in this story references the major plot twist of the book or movie. I used the same settings and characters, but in a very AU way. For Public Enemies, nothing except for the ultimate fate of John Dillinger, and that’s historical fact, anyway.
General Summary: U.S. Marshals Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule are sent to Shutter Island on a unique assignment, and while there, discover shocking answers to a decades-old mystery.
Chapter Summary: It’s a brand new day.
Date Of Completion: April 21, 2010
Date Of Posting: September 7, 2010
Disclaimer: I don’t own ‘em, Dennis Lehane, Paramount and Universal do, more’s the pity.
Word Count: 746
Feedback welcome and appreciated.
Author’s Notes: This is a story that started running through my head as soon as I left the theater after my first viewing. Like the patients on Shutter Island, I can’t escape! ;)
The entire series can be found here.

BRAND NEW DAY

Chances taken,
Love revealed,
Sunrise bright,
It all feels right.

Esther Valencourt
"Brand New Day"
1906 C.E.

The day dawned brightly on Shutter Island, rays of golden light streaming in through the windows. Chuck figured it was a good omen. He watched Teddy sleep, the light highlighting his dark blond hair, marveling at how rested he looked.

He knew that Teddy Daniels was a tortured man. Chuck knew what combat was like, how it scarred a man, sometimes physically, always mentally and emotionally.

And then there was the added horror of seeing a nightmare like Dachau.

And when you came home, you lost your wife in a fire.

Teddy Daniels had rarely known peace since Chuck had known him.

Maybe I can give you peace. He smiled. Among other things.

Teddy stirred awake. “Mmm, good morning.”

“It is good.” Chuck kissed his lover. “The best.” He chuckled. “Also cold.”

“Well, we’ll pack up and board the ferry.”

“Back to warm apartments?” Chuck left the word ‘separate’ unspoken.

“We’ll figure something out.” Teddy gave Chuck a quick kiss. “Let’s get going. The quicker we can get off this island, the quicker we can help Mel and Johnny.”

“Guess we owe ‘em.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, they set us a good example.”

Teddy grinned.

Teddy and Chuck enjoyed a jovial breakfast with Trey and the other orderlies, then headed up to the infirmary.

It was quiet this early in the morning, only a few beds occupied, but Johnny was resting comfortably in his, Mel in a chair next to him. They were eating breakfast, the Marshals still amazed by the transformation in Mel as he smiled.

Ellie Marino greeted them at the entrance. "Off to the mainland, gentlemen?"

"Yes, ma'am," Teddy said jauntily. “Looks like you'll have a steady worker as long as Jo...Jack is in residence."

"Oh, that's for sure." The brunette looked over at the happy couple. "Whenever one of them lands in here, the other always asks to help out on the ward."

"Never any trouble, I'd bet."

She shook her head. “As docile as lambs.” She pushed the pins holding her cap to her head tighter in her thick hair. “Y’know, when I first started working here, I was creeped out by those two, but watching their devotion to each other…hell, I should be so lucky to find a man who’d cherish me half as much as they do each other. Maybe it’s a little weird, but who am I to judge?”

“A very enlightened attitude, Nurse Marino. Dr. Cawley would be proud.” Chuck smiled.

She laughed. “Well, you learn things in this job, Marshal.” She glanced back at Mel and Johnny. “Hard to believe they’re killers.”

Chuck automatically began to deny that statement but caught himself. Teddy’s hand brushed against his arm.

“We’re just going to say goodbye,” Teddy said.

“Sure, go ahead.”

Chuck nodded his thanks, and followed his partner to Johnny’s bed.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” said Johnny brightly. He caressed Mel’s arm, Mel looking incredibly happy.

“We’re leaving today.” Teddy glanced around but no one was paying attention to their little group. He lowered his voice. “We’re going to get to work on your case as soon as we get back to the mainland.”

Johnny’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. “We know that you might not be able to get us out of here.”

“That’s a possibility, but we’re going to try our best, that we promise.”

Johnny looked at Mel, his smile genuine now. “Thanks.”

“Yes,” Mel said. “Thank you. You don’t know how hope will keep us going.”

Chuck gently squeezed his shoulder. “You’ve shown us what courage is…and real love.”

Mel’s eyes sparkled. “Happy to do it.”

Teddy frowned slightly. “We won’t be able to keep in touch. Writing either one of you letters is too suspicious and risky.”

“Send letters to Trey,” Mel said softly. “He’ll pass them on.”

“You can trust him?”

Mel nodded, taking hold of Johnny’s hand. “He’s helped us with stuff before.”

“All right, we’ll manage it.”

“Safe journey, gentlemen,” said Johnny, and Mel echoed him.

Teddy and Chuck said their goodbyes and headed out of the infirmary. At the doorway, they paused and looked back, Mel and Johnny smiling as they ate breakfast together.

On the ferry back to Boston, Teddy slid his hand across the railing and covered Chuck’s hand.

It was a brand new day.
