Author’s Note: This story came to me as a result of all the discussion on LJ about our Little Bird and the OOC behavior he’s been exhibiting in DC canon for the past few years. This is my ‘explanation’ for it, and it’s very DCU in the oddness of it all, but in a universe that accepts men with superpowers via a yellow sun and women as ancient/modern Amazons, just to name a few things, I guess this fits! :)

MOONLESS NIGHT

Nightwing glided through the darkness, escrima sticks in hand as he kicked the thugs trying to smuggle the heavy boxes from the docks.  The fight made his blood sing, his fists making contact, alternating with the sticks.  The curses and grunts of the thugs exhilarated him.  It meant he was doing his job.

When he was finished, he looked down at the unconscious wharf rats with a triumphant smile.  His communicator beeped and he activated it.

“Nightwing, report.”

Oracle’s voice was the robotic tone that Nightwing knew well.  He made his report, and when he was about to sign off, Oracle asked, “What’s up with you and Red Hood?”

Nightwing shuffled and poised to close the connection. “He got what he deserved.”

“Really?” Even through the metallic sound, Nightwing heard the coolness of Barbara Gordon. “Maybe you’d better come in and we’ll discuss this.”

“Negative.” He shrugged. “There’s nothing to discuss.  Robin and I took care of things.”

“By…” She took a deep breath. “…beating up your…?” She didn’t finish the sentence.

“He’s not.” Nightwing’s voice was cold. “I’m clocking off.” He closed the connection, swinging up over the rooftops.

Flying always made him feel better.  He was at home here in the air, and the strong, young body made it easy to fly.  He wished he could ask for even better flight from Superman, but after the little incident with him threatening the Man of Steel with Green Kryptonite, he had not been in contact with the alien.

Speaking with Oracle was not pleasant.  Their off-again, on-again romance and his little dalliance with Kory hadn’t helped their relationship.

He supposed he could have looked up Roy, but since he had fought with him and called him a junkie, they weren’t speaking at all.

Bruce?  Forget it.

He bypassed his apartment and headed out toward the ocean.  Bludhaven was a miserable rathole of a city, but it was by the sea, and there were also woods still untouched between it and Gotham.

Nightwing alighted in the woods, walking with sure steps even though it was pitch-black.  It was a moonless night, but the vigilante didn’t care.

He smirked.  He didn’t care much about anything anymore, right?

He found the old tree that he had been looking for, admiring its enormous girth and gnarled branches.  The maple leaves were just tiny buds, spring warmth settling over the woods.  An owl hooted as he touched the trunk.

The trunk shimmered and he walked inside.
