I really like Hiram, I'm glad that they had one peson on their side, after the truth about their relationship got know. And him helping out the boys just made me want to hug him.

Yeah, a fired-up Dillinger is a dangerous thing! :)

I figured the boys needed someone on their side! He plays the doddering old man very well, hiding a pretty sharp mind. :)
Thanks so much for reading and commenting! :)

Poor Mel though, he always comes out on the wrong end of these things! Our poor southern gentlemen always seems to get battered. But Johnnie's always there to kiss it and make it better! <3
As usual I love all your little details and how you approach all these tangled up social issues and views so flawlessly. It really makes your writing feel...alive.
By the way sorry for the belated comment, it's actually taken me three days to read the whole thing, my energy and time is rather limited and taken up by kitten care and trying to care of myself, much to poor hubby's frustration. I'm not much for bed rest I guess! I make a lousy patient!

I had a GREAT time writing this! I wanted to slip in as many comfort moments as I could, since I had the boys hurting so! :)
I like the cast of characters you gave Johnnie and Mel to interact with you, and I thought the boarding house was a fun idea!
It was good practice OC-wise. :) And boardinghouses were so common back then, it was easy to come up with the idea.

*laughs*
I know, I batter Mel terribly! But he suffers so beautifully! ;)
And I do like the idea of Johnny as caretaker. It really brings out his tender side. :)
