Alice In Wonderland (Review)
I just saw Alice In Wonderland this afternoon!
I liked it. The film had the Tim Burtonesque touches: quirky, unusual, and a little dark, but it was fun. I saw it in 3-D and especially enjoyed the effect of the Cheshire Cat. :)
The film was beautifully shot and designed, and well worth seeing in 3-D. I’m familiar with the Alice tales, though I read them ages ago.
Mia Wasikowska did a good job as Alice, a young girl of nineteen being pushed into marriage to an oh-so-proper lord, and she takes off after the White Rabbit in the middle of his proposal in front of all the engagement party guests. She falls down the rabbit hole, and the Wonderland (now Underland) characters keep whispering that she should remember her first time with them.
Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen were very good as the wicked Queen and her ethereal sister.
The White Queen is interesting in that she's the 'good' Queen, but she seems as if she could cross over to the 'dark' side without a lot of bother. ;) It was a sense I got from the scene in which she brews the potion for Alice to shrink down from giant to normal size. She reminded me a little of Morticia Addams' sister Ophelia. ;)
Johnny Depp is truly top-notch as the Mad Hatter. He gives the character quirkiness, pathos, courage, and many other qualities. It’s amazing to see the range of his acting ability. He was totally convincing as John Dillinger in Public Enemies, and he convinced me that he was the off-his-rocker Hatter (the best people are!) with his charm and talent. Besides, he looks good in chains! ;)
I love to see him futterwacken! ;)
Note about his orange hair: it is supposed to represent mercury poisoning, as hatters used mercury to cure felt. That's why his eyes and fingernails had touches of it, too. GORGEOUS green eyes! :)
If you like the Alice stories and are a fan of either Tim Burton or Johnny Depp, I recommend this movie. Some people spoke glowingly of it, while others loathed it. I fall somewhere in between. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon, and I was very impressed by Johnny Depp. I didn’t fall in love with this role as I did with his Dillinger performance, but I’m going to be seeking out AiW fic now! ;)
I’d also recommend seeing it in 3-D just for the Cheshire Cat alone! LOL!
Nice touch of Alan Rickman’s voice as the Blue Caterpillar. When he says “You stupid girl!” he’s channelling Severus Snape all the way! ;)
