I have so much fun at the con that I will be bummed when it's gone. I enjoy fic online as much as in zines, but the net can't replace the excitement of the Dealers' Room, the Art Show and the wacky goings on in the halls. I loved having people chill in my room, and the panels were enjoyable, too.
MW was the first con I ever had to get on a plane and fly to; I would miss it terribly if it went away...
I personally think the room raffle is its greatest enemy. I was planning on staying home because I never heard from them. If one of my friends didn't get a room I would not have been able to come. I'm from Boston and I have to make plans way in advance (14 pets, work, mother, plane tix)so I really need to know months ahead if I have a room or not, not the week before the con.
Hopefully next year the hotel will fix the fire damage, the courtyard and other facilities (and tell me I have a room way in advance!)
While I love fanfic on-line, I want to hang out with my fen friends also.
The last-minute room thing kills this con. I know personally of more than one person who cancelled due to the uncertainty. They REALLY need to get their act together.
If this year's low attendance doesn't get things rolling for change/improvement, nothing will.
I'm really glad that you had such a great time and it was interesting to read your thoughts on it! And that's cool about getting bumped to first class! But it was a twenty minute flight? Wow, I thought my little less than an hour flight from the Bay Area to LA was short!
After my one hideous experience flying from Detroit to Lansing (the plane broke down for the return flight to Detroit and they had to pull the only mechanic on-call off the GOLF COURSE) I have always rented a car at the Detroit airport and driven to Mediawestcon. That way, I have a way to get to Mejers, too!
This was my first MW in about 3 years and the difference in energy level/attendance felt quite sudden. All the same, I still had a great time meeting up with friends old and new (and a big thanks to you for setting up the CB/Batman panels--so much fun!) and I'd hate to see it go too soon. Even with decreased numbers it's still the biggest con of its type (that I know of) and there's no good replacement for it were it to go. Practically all my fannish activity is online these days, but there's just no substitute for a giant multi-day fannish hotel party.
Of course, I realize I'm preaching to the choir here... :-)
Yeah, it's been steadily decreasing in attendance/energy for the last three years.
You're welcome about the panels. I had loads of fun with them! :)
Preaching to the choir? Sure. ;) But it's true, I'll miss MW terribly if it folds and while on-line fandom is great, it's good to be face-to-face once in awhile.
I think the litmus test for MW will be next year if the economy picks up. If that's so and it's still lagging in attendance, then changes would have to be made, IMO. But, hey, I'm just an attendee! I'm sure TPTB will make their own decisions. :)

Everything sounds so interesting about the con. I've never been to one before, but maybe in the future I will.
And let's hear it for first class! Isn't it nice to feel pampered every once in a while?
I'm glad you had a good time, and had smooth traveling!

The first one is always the best! :)

I loved it! Just wish it had been a longer flight. :)
