*grin* I always read ahead in my textbooks, too. History and geography and english, mostly, though language texts too. History-wise, I agree. I love viewing eras in their own little capsule, seeing what it would have been like to live there, unknowing of the future. I love old newsreels, and ads, and the like, too. A flavour of the past.
Oh, and food! Definitely food. Though my favourite to meet in writing is a fry-up, I think. Everything at once. Sizzling onions and bacon in the pan, sausage on the grill, juicy tomato. Taste and smell and sound and texture, all at once. Love it.

They were always too slow for me! We often didn't get to the end of the book before the schoo; year ended, so I had to do my own reading. :)

I adore the primary sources! While it's fascinating to see another era's view of a past era (the early '60s commemorated the Civil War Centennial, for example), the actual Civil War sources reflect their time well.

*nods nods* Came in handy around exams, too. I had a whole other topic available to me in Geo that my class didn't, because I'd read ahead when bored. *smug grin*
And primary sources rock. Somehow, I think the ads are the best. Like the ones in old Victorian newspapers, and 40's bulletins and propaganda announcements. Give you a lavour of real life and how people tried to shape it.

I like the vintage ad comm that's here on LJ. :)
And ads are like the modern version of cave or pyramid paintings: they can tell you a lot!
