BY A THREAD

Dangling by a thread,

Over the abyss,

Madness swirling below.

Peace or destruction?

"The Year Of Chaos"

1968 C.E.

August 29, 1968

The deathwatch for Robert Kennedy continued into the next day, and then it was over. The senator's body was placed on a plane to bring him home and then loaded on a train for the funeral journey to Washington, D.C. to be buried beside his brother, and just as the FDR train brought him home to Hyde Park from Warm Springs, the train rolled past citizens gathered to say goodbye. The funeral was televised, and Ocean View's brand-new color TV broadcast it all. Some wag said the funeral was 'in living color '.

After the burial life gradually returned to normal, if a little subdued. Spring turned to summer, and the chaotic world was kept at bay. The patients of Ocean View Hospital resumed their routines.

The world started to seep back in via the TV.  The Democratic National Convention in August was a horror show of self-important protesters and baton-wielding police. It was a mess from beginning to end, a wellspring of utter chaos inside and outside the convention hall.

Julie Sheffield remembered the night of June 5th. She had gone back to Adam. His tear-streaked face looked up at her as he clung to his imaginary partner.

June 5, 1968

"Frank and I knew it was a conspiracy."

"How so?"

"Jack Ruby walks right in and shoots Oswald, who was surrounded by dozens of patrolmen and detectives in the basement garage of the Dallas Police Department Headquarters? Trust me, Ruby was shutting Oswald up."

Julie blinked. She really hadn't considered that. She had pretty much accepted the Lone Nut theory given out by the Warren Commission. Now she wasn't so sure.

& & &

Julie sighed. Adam would know. The police were either incompetent or corrupt. Such a lapse was explainable only by these two categories. Easy to guess which category the Dallas Police Department fell into.

She brushed a stray lock of hair back. It was frightening to think of the level of such corruption. The world had split its seams on November 22, 1963, and that fraying of society's fabric was glaringly evident today.

Time to make my career move.

She would give her notice in October if she secured a cruise job for the holidays. Until then she would do her best to protect her vulnerable patients.

She stepped outside on her break. There was only a touch of humidity, unusual for August, but she would take it. It was still hot. Maybe she would take a quick walk through the garden. She set off at a brisk pace.

& & &

Adam had taken his morning walk and was now sitting on his favorite bench. He rubbed the small of his back. Too bad the bench did not have a back.

You must be getting old.

He would have the ask his exact age. Or maybe would just ask Frank.

The sparkling ocean attracted him. There were many sailboats bobbing on the water on this beautiful summer day. A powerboat roared by, getting raised fists from the sailboat owners as the boats bobbed wildly in the powerboat's wake.

Adam stood and stretched. He wore cream-colored chinos and a short-sleeved cobalt-blue shirt. He wore sandals and ran a hand through his thick, chestnut hair as he walked toward the seawall.

As the powerboat's roar split the air, a pair of muscled arms suddenly grabbed him around the chest, a large body pressed against his back. A meaty hand clamped over his mouth.

"Toldja I'd split ya in two," said Ed Becker's smirking voice in Adam's ear just before Becker's lips savagely kissed the back of his neck, the smell of his sweat strong.

Adam felt panic as he struggled against the steel-banded arms and felt Becker's cock hard against his buttocks. He was forced to his knees as Becker kissed and sucked his neck. Becker lifted his shirt and pinched his nipples hard. Adam whimpered as Becker laughed.

Becker ripped his chinos, pulling his underwear down to his thighs. Adam fought desperately as he felt the huge cock poke his buttocks.

"You're gonna be so sweet. A tight butt is a good thing. I get to stretch you wide. I love me a virgin."

That's what you think, buddy.

Just as Becker started to enter him, Adam somehow found the agility to jab an elbow into Becker's ribs and scramble out as Becker roared. He started to straighten up but Becker grabbed his ankle and dragged him back.

"You bitch! I was gonna go easy on ya but now I'm gonna ram so hard and deep you're gonna wiggle like a fish on a hook."

Adam used leverage to throw Becker off. He yelled for help and tripped, falling onto the seawall. Becker was big but quick, and Adam was hampered by his underwear pinioning his thighs. Becker grabbed his hair and yanked his head back as his cock slid down the small of Adam's sore back, resting on the curve of his butt.

Adam yanked his underwear up and twisted, losing a tuft of his hair as he stumbled and realized to his horror that he was rolling over the seawall and down the cliff. He screamed as he grabbed a branch growing out of a crag. He dangled helplessly several feet over the jagged rocks of the cliff base. His sandals fell off, falling to the rocks below.

Becker loomed over him, laughing almost maniacally. "Damn, I sure woulda liked to split ya, bitch, but oh, well. Payback for messin' me up with Silly Sally."

Becker reached down to shake the branch. Adam saw the white-capped waves crashing over the rocks. He was teetering over the abyss.

"Help! Frank, help me!"

Becker kept laughing and shaking. Adam was hanging by a thread, the world upside-down. His body twirled slowly, then shook as Becker kept working.

"Fall, bitch!" he raged.

Adam felt the branch loosening. He sobbed as it frayed like a loose thread in an old shirt, dooming him to a broken body to match his broken mind.

The branch came loose.

& & &

Shouts, screams, the world spinning wildly. Adam sobbed for Frank, his legs splaying as he plummeted headfirst. Clouds swirling, gasps of pain, something raw and harsh pinioning his arms. Despair, fear, loss.

I can't leave Frank!

Tears blurred his vision. Nausea, dangling, screams.

He blacked out as he plunged into the abyss.
