Kristen and Ben watched the hasty exit of David down the street. Another phone call, another lame excuse.
"Something's up," Ben said.
"Yeah."
"But what?"
Kristen shrugged. "Beats me."
A cavalier response covered her distress. What had happened to their smooth-as-silk relationship, both working and personal? It seemed to be fracturing, little-by-little.
Well, why wouldn't it? David and I lusting after each other, keeping Ben out of the loop, and my craziness lately.
She stared at the house across the street. Orson LeRoux's house. Why did her life always cycle back to that worthless piece of trash? There was an irony in there somewhere.
Maybe David's having a hard time adjusting to becoming a priest. Not all it's cracked up to be? Careful what you wish for? Collar too tight?
"I miss us," Kristen said.
"Huh?"
"The three of us."
"Oh." Ben hunched his shoulders. "Me, too."
"Do you think he's not cut out to be a man of the cloth?"
Ben chuckled. "Good one."
They both stood against the cold, hands jammed into pockets, staring at the LeRoux house.
"They gave David the daily 6:00 Mass," Kristen said.
"Ouch."
"Nobody's there. A few elderly stalwarts, and that's pretty much it."
"The Church has only itself to blame."
A breeze blew Kristen's hair. "I agree."
"Aren't you the agreeable one today?" Ben said, sounding amused.
Kristen chuckled. "Funny, I don't feel agreeable."
"No, you're feeling down-in-the-dumps."
Kristen grimaced. "I can't seem to remember the last time I felt happy."
"Your husband's home, right?"
"Of course I'm happy about Andy being home and for good."
"That's good."
Kristen hunched her shoulders. "What's good anymore?"
"Huh?"
"I mean, evil wins. Good only wins in the movies."
"Aw, c'mon." Ben nudged her shoulder with his. "Cheer up, Sunshine. It's not that bad."
Kristen smiled. "Since when did you become a Sunshine Sammy? You're our Gloomy Gus."
Ben laughed. "Gloomy Gus?"
"That's right. Look at it this way: David's Faith, you're the Skeptic, and I'm both."
Ben looked at her. "You're both?"
"That's right." Kristen smiled smugly. "Like the Trinity."
"Wait a minute, what?"
"You know, the DC Comics Trinity: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Superman is Faith: Batman is the Skeptic, and Wonder Woman combines the best of both."
"So now you're Wonder Woman?"
"That's right." Kristen waited a beat. "So no cracks?"
"Why would I make cracks? That's bad-ass."
Kristen looked over at Ben. "Seriously?"
"Well, I am curious about your invisible plane."
Kristen elbowed him in the ribs. "Wise-ass."
"Ouch!" Ben rubbed his side. "What did you sharpen those elbows with?"
"Pencil sharpener."
"So, Wonder Woman, can you get your magic lasso to make David tell us what's going on?"
"I'll make a note if it."
They removed silent for a few minutes. Finally, Kristen sighed. "okay."
"Ready?"
"Yeah."
Ben and Kristen walked across the street, missing the third member of the Trinity.
