Lois absorbed the information that Clark told her and the boys. Morgan Edge was his half-brother from Krypton? Edge was plotting a take-over of Earth? Offering to bring Clark’s birth mother Lara back?
Well, isn’t this just peachy?
She could feel a headache coming on. Her sons were remarkably calm, but she knew they were feeling a mix of emotions like she was, including fear.
The thing was, she knew how important family was to Clark. Jonathan and Martha had meant everything to him, and he was able to speak to the consciousness of Jor-El at the Fortress. What would he give to finally meet his birth mother?
I’m afraid. I’m afraid he’ll want to connect with Kryptonians. This is his heritage we’re talking about.
Clark had to leave as Superman, and Lois spent time reassuring her sons that they were Clark’s family, and that was worth everything.
“Mom, that other Superman…he threw in with the Kryptonians,” Jonathan said. She could tell he was nervous.
“That was another Earth’s Superman. We know ours,” she said firmly.
Jordan made a nervous hitch. “Dad will never join Morgan Edge or whatever his name is.”
“No, he won’t.” Lois crossed her arms. “Your father was a baby when he was rocketed to Earth. The Kents took him in and raised him with love. Earth is his home.”
Adopted home. If the situation was reversed, what would I do? If I was raised on Krypton but had a chance to join Terrans, would I do it?
Of course, the question would be: would she follow Terrans plotting to take over Krypton? Because Edge and his army were planning to do just that to Earth. Heritage was one thing, conquering another.
“It’ll be all right, Mom,” Jordan said.
She smiled. “Of course it will.”
The front door opened and her father came in. Sam Lane was grim but said, “We’ve got troops all around the farm. We’ve got Kryptonite weapons, so we’ll have a fighting chance.”
The twins exchanged looks and Lois said, “Can we talk on the porch, Dad?”
Lois and Sam went outside. The screen door creaked as it shut.
“All right, read me the riot act about the weapons,” Sam said, crossing his arms.
Lois shifted uncomfortably. “No riot act. I…understand why you developed the weapons.”
A flicker of surprise showed in Sam’s eyes. “Okay.”
Lois grimaced. “I still don’t like them, but we’ve got an army of superpowered Kryptonians headed our way. Superman can’t take them all on by himself.”
Sam relaxed. “I wasn’t thrilled with all this, either, but defense can be a dirty business.”
“Yeah.”
Sam cocked his head. “What’s wrong, honey?”
“Clark would not join the Kryptonians, Dad.”
“No, but other threats are out there. What about mind control? Can you imagine the weapon Superman could be?”
Lois looked stricken. “It would kill him.”
Sam nodded slowly. “You’re sure Clark has no divided loyalties?”
“I’m sure. He values Krypton but won’t join conquerors, no matter who they are.”
Sam nodded again. “I believe it, too.”
Lois smiled slightly. “Family sticks together.”
“Always.” Sam touched her shoulder. “And we’re Clark’s family.”
He went to check on his men and Lois went back inside. Her sons were in intense conversation, heads close together.
Twinspeak, she thought fondly.
The boys looked at her. Jonathan said, “Mom, we believe in Dad. Kryptonians or not, he’ll stand with us.”
“He will always do the right thing,” she said softly.
The boys looked relieved to hear her say that. She was certain of what she said. Clark’s Kryptonian heritage had a strong pull, but so did his Terran heritage.
He grew up here. His memories are of Earth, not Krypton. What forms you in childhood is difficult to shake.
Lois held out her arms and Jonathan and Jordan joined her in a fervent hug. They would get through this as they always did, as a family.
Kents, Els and Lanes. All together, we’re unstoppable.
