Fic Tally (2016)
I wrote HOW many stories this year? :)
First, a little background:
I joined LJ in October of 2006 (first post in November), and posted my first story, Announcement I: The Ready Room, in December of 2006. It was a Clark/Bruce tale, and the remaining 3 stories for that year were of that pairing as well.
I counted each year’s stories, and broke them down by pairing, which I’ll discuss below the stats. I used the following method: simple counting, but if a multi-chapter story started in one year and ended in the next, I counted the year it began. Time And Place was posted in 2006 and ended in early 2007.
Naturally I counted a pairing if they were the focus of the story, but if they shared equal ‘screen time’ with another couple or couples, that story was also counted as theirs. In some of my multiple pairing stories, several couples could count it as their story ( Strange Brew, The Jig’s Up!, and many others). Ollie/Dinah, for instance, have a number of 8 in the early years, but only 1 story was written with them as the lead couple. The rest are stories they share with others. So if anyone bothered to total the pairings and the story totals, the pairings would be a higher total than the stories.

Well, another year has passed! And what hath it wrought? Besides politics gone crazy, let’s see, an output that was pretty decent. Considering RL turmoil and my attention to profic, I think I did all right in the fanfic world.
One of my big projects in 2016 was going back and tallying the word count of the early years to get the numbers. I went back and wrote down the word count of each fic post for the years 2006-2011. Now I have a yearly word count and a total.
This year I wrote 31 stories for a total of 74, 868 words. This is a word count of all stories posted to my LJ and do not include words written that were unposted. I’d say the word count might be double that if I included those.
Since 2006 I’ve written 656 stories with a word count of 1,842,099. Not bad, huh? :)
I did pick up a new fandom, Bridge Of Spies, the Tom Hanks Cold War thriller that was based on real events. A pity that didn’t create more buzz. It was a beautiful period piece with loving detail to cars, clothes, buildings…the story hardly needed embellishment as it was dramatic enough in real life! Hanks played an Irish-American lawyer who helped negotiate the deal to bring U.S. captured U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers home from a Russian prison. I may have another story in my quiver for this fandom!
I would say my biggest surprise is that I posted 0 stories starring Bruce/Dick. Wow! I thought I had at least a few on the 2016 list but apparently not. I was working on Book III of The Raven And The Nightingale but drifted away from it, so it’s still got a long way to go when I pick it up again. I hope to do so in 2017 but you never know. I did post the remainder of Book II in the early part of 2016.
My new writing philosophy is to see where the wind takes me, so very few goals, but I suspect Steve/Diana will get some kind of attention as it will be the Year of Wonder Woman, as her first live-action movie will debut this year.
I did manage to post some Han/Luke as I wanted in 2016. In fact, along with Natasha/Pepper from Marvel Comics, the Star Wars boys had 4 stories, which ties them behind Clark/Bruce, who had 7 stories posted. Which is an irony in itself, as my Clark/Bruce Muses have slowed down considerably, but they still managed to claim the top spot, as they have done every year except for 2014 and 2015. So that was another surprise for me as I looked over my stats. Always nice to still be able to surprise yourself! :)
Most of my fanfic creativity was taken up with the marvel-bang this year. I wrote a Steve/Bucky story that was told from the POV of Tony, who inexplicably wakes up in the past to observe the duo before the war scars them so horribly. Just A Couple Of Boys From Brooklyn IV: There Was Summer received good reviews. I don’t know if I’ll be signing up for any Big Bangs this year, as I’m trying to avoid deadlines, but I’ve learned never to say never! ;)
I might try some new pairings, revisit some old ones, and in general, just have fun! :)
