I recently went with a friend of mine to see the Oscar-nominated Tom Hanks movie, Bridge Of Spies. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Spoilers are behind the cut and a spoiler-free recommendation below.
The movie is on my list to get from the library, so I was happy to read that you enjoyed it so much. It's gotten great reviews, so I don't know who these cretins are who think it's an 'old people' movie. What, know something of history? You're kidding, of course. What a barren world they must live in, if all they know is yesterday.
The movie is nominated for an Oscar, and so is the actor who played Rudolf Abel. It's really a fine film and while it won't win Best Picture (not sexy enough, I suppose), it's there on the list and well-deserved, IMO.
It's a film that Hollywood used to make as a matter-of-course: intelligent, compelling, and with a minimum of violence. There is a scene with East German guards shooting at desperate people trying to scale the Wall, but that's pretty much it.
People and their attitudes really baffle me sometimes. Bad enough that Americans have little sense of history, but to automatically label something as only of interest to people who lived through the era? How narrow-minded is THAT?
