"Be careful"
I’ve heard so many people I know utter that phrase to me before playing broomball on Friday night. I may have not worn a helmet as suggested by some, but I came prepared with old shin guards I found and hiking shoes. I forgot to bring a beanie & some gloves, but I was warm enough without them as evidenced by a few times in which I played without a jacket on. The shoes I wore gripped the ice at least twice as much as my regular shoes. The traction decreased later that night as the soles of my shoes got a bit more slippery from the small ice chunks that melted on them. Like last time, it was tons of fun, and I feel like I did just as good playing this time as I did last time.
I only had 2 falls, both of which were near the end of the night. The first one was more of a slide, in which I practically did a 360 as if I were break dancing. I only suffered a small scrape on my elbow for that. That was perhaps the second coolest thing I’ve done in broomball, with the exception of narrowly hitting a ball right between the legs of someone that was charging me. The other fall was considerably worse, which acquainted the right side of my body to the ice. My knee and elbow got bruised and they both hurt like hell in the first one to two minutes, making me limp for a while, but the skin around those areas were only red and didn’t get scratched up. I was afraid of being really sore the next morning, but after seven hours of sleep that night, I hardly felt it. After broomball, most of us ended up going to IHOP, where I scarfed down a country omelet.
Earlier that night, I had dinner with Kassi and her sister. Then, Kassi and I went to a bar and sung some Karaoke and met up with one of her co-workers there, Sarah. I sung Lenny Kravitz - American Woman, Goo Goo Dolls - Broadway, and Vertical Horizon - You're a God. They're in order starting with the one I enjoyed singing the most. It also seemed to be other people's favorite too. I don’t know if it was my singing ability that night or the types of songs I chose, but I felt quite a bit better about my first karaoke bar performance than this one. I put down "Evanescense - Bring Me to Live" so that I could do a bit of a duet with Kassi (assuming it would be the version with the guy shouting stuff during the chorus), but I had to get to the ice rink.
"And I thought I was a late sleeper..."
I managed to wake up Kassi by calling her after 2PM the next day. She invited me to play lazer tag with her co-workers before I went to play poker with Jake and company. We had to wait for quite some time to get in a game, because there were two birthday parties being hosted and little kids were everywhere. We played a few games of air hockey and I played some arcade games. The lazer tag game itself was lots of fun, as expected. It got off to a bit of a slow start, having gone to a 2nd floor tower that had very few people in it, but I made my way back and forth between the two towers a couple of times. It was quite amusing when one set of kids tried to hunt me down as revenge for shooting them. Since I was a much faster sprinter than they were (running isn’t allowed), I was able to out run them and shoot ‘em a couple times on the fly before loosing them. In the end, I got 4th place.
The poker night at Jake’s dad’s place was lots of fun, as to be expected. Some beer and many snacks were all I got out of it from a financial standpoint though, as I managed to lose all the bills in my wallet, about twice that of the cheap buy-in. In addition to not getting very good hands, I suppose I stayed in too long for some games. I hope my luck changes just as much as my strategy the next time I play.
