Contrary to popular belief, Colin Morgan did not possess the social intuition people liked to think he did.
On the show, Arthur may have been the one who was utterly oblivious to Merlin’s little jaunts along the path of sorcery, but offscreen it was Colin who was completely clueless, his perception of everybody around him wired in a purely platonic way. Bradley could have waved two late-night movie tickets to Love Actually and a red rose under Colin’s nose, and it still wouldn’t have crossed his innocent mind that Bradley was madly in love with him.
Bradley didn’t mind. It meant that he could sling his arm around Colin’s shoulder whenever he liked, offer to carry Colin’s bags to ‘practise his chivalry’ to better play Arthur, and spend endless hours in the lush grass with his back leaning against Colin’s, reciting his lines in ridiculous, exotic accents with the simple aim of making Colin laugh, and all this without ever raising Colin’s suspicions. Colin never for a moment doubted that it was all in friendship.
But there were moments, inevitably, when Bradley wished Colin knew. So that he could loop his arms around Colin’s waist, instead of his shoulders; so that he could bury his face in Colin’s sweet-scented hair when he hugged him, instead of just scruffing it up as he passed by; and so that the playful exchange of nicknames would be instead be replaced by Bradley’s murmurs of “Colin, Colin,” late at night, in deeper, sweeter, more beckoning tones, as though that name belonged to Bradley alone…
But those things would have to remain firmly in Bradley’s mind. They would have to lie dormant, buried deep in the night when Bradley’s thoughts meandered through forbidden pastures, in pursuit of a dream so sweet and so impossible, permanently hovering just-over-the-hill, just beyond reach.
For Colin, Bradley reached as he had never had to before.
